I was just trying to find new sources of little metal balls for your kid! LOL... Apologize for any jacking... I think the CVs are a potential issue for everyone, especially for anyone with any kind of lift. Are the RCVs and answer? maybe a slight improvement for running angles but they do not seem prepared to survive the plunge.... The Ultimate with the upgrade spicers? sounds like jury is out...

I appreciate the thread.... I actually am gleaning quite a bit from is despite the obvious side track banter.

oh yea, i don't mind at all. was just joking.

Honestly, I think the affordable answer is limiting straps. That's what I'm going with.

Right now that makes sense. Until we have a better answer. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the Ultimate.....

God @!#$@#... You

I had to go back and watch the video again but I’m amazed. You must have caught just enough traction to pop that. I mean, that’s a hairy spot for sure, but between the snow, ice, wet/slimy/greasy/slick mud, I’m guessing your front lockers were in and somehow asymmetrically the failed side caught a rock to grab onto or something? Or are you more thinking it was the drop angle itself while popping up that blew it out?

Regardless, to me it doesn’t look like it should’ve been a solid enough grab (on that slick surface) to blow an axle EXCEPT when you factor for the 5” lift. If it’s me, I’d go straps also and im now subscribed to find out if that doesn’t fix it.

Great thread btw. Bunch of food for thought if running with a lift.

I didn't even have my front locker on...... It's 100% the droop that caught it. I've broken 3 so far... 1 with locker on and 2 where just hitting something and drooping too much.

With 5” of lift the cv probably gets worn out a bit over time and then eventually fails catastrophically. @Snacktime has a good thread on early cv wear from a spacer lift.

This is the benefit of staying within 2" right? That you don't overextend the CV and put all the extra wear on the suspension and steering systems.

Wow. I find that even more crazy then only b/c if one side caught the diff should’ve spun the opposing wheel and reduced force.
Not sure the correct term in off-roading, but in snowboarding, the initial act of upward extension puts more pressure at surface level and is called up-weighting (e.g. immediate sinking down is down-unweighting). I’m wondering if that second as you began popping out of the bog had just enough pressure/traction and full extension of your suspension to toast that cv? 🤷

From what I can tell, it over extends and one of the ball bearings hit the metal clip holding them in, a ball gets released out of the cage and shreds it....

Ahhh. Or that.
Either way, I agree with you that limiting straps (in theory) should correct the issue.

There was a local guy that kept blowing CV axles with a 7" rough country. The spacer used on top of the struts is to long and rough country hasn't bothered to fix the issue. Same as running to big of a top spacer. Need to differentiate between lift and adding length to the strut.

Staying in the 2" range certainly helps preserve the CV angle but coilover travel contributes to over extending the CV angle. Some of the aftermarket coilovers have way more travel than the CVs can handle. A spacer on top of the coilover makes the probelm worse. Limit straps should do the trick IMO.
