Having an issue in my 2.7…..maybe…. (3,500 miles)

my wife usually drives the bronco…so I only get in it once a week.

something seems weird..

When you start from a standing start, and accelerate moderately, it seems like its about to fly apart, winds out, makes a lot of engine whining noise….

but after you get up to 35 and get off the throttle and then get back on it, it has twice as much power, sounds like it should and takes off….

thinking this was freakin odd…. I put the boost gauge on the instrument cluster and, like i thought…

when you take off from a standing start (in eco, normal or sport. Doesn’t matter which).. it builds less than a pound of boost until you let off the throttle…. Doesn’t seem to matter how fast you eventually go… no boost.. but its scary cause the motor is really sounding like a rabid sewing machine….

when you are crusing along at a steady speed and drop the trottle, you get boost… and lots of it depending on the drive mode…

In a previously life, I worked on RX7’s and if this was an FD twin turbo RX7… id say the small turbo wasn’t working…but… when that happened, the second turbo would eventually kick in….

In this case, it seems like the wastegate is only closing when you are at speed already…

its about due for its first oil change so im going to have them check it…

i just want to know if there’s something im overlooking that is switched off or something before i sound like an idiot to the service manager.

Welcome to the world of turbo lag... I wish they had done a v8 and skipped all this crap.
Its not lag… I know what that is..

Its not building boost at all during acceleration from a standing stop.

It changes if you go into Sport mode (a little)

Ford Performance Tune changes it significantly.

its a torque management tool to help keep you from spinning out on start.

Was this after a cold start? I’ve noticed mine holds gears longer and lets the motor turn a higher rpm, I assume to help it warm up.

Then again when driving it really won’t make much boost in first anyways unless you really get into the throttle since the gear is so short. I’ve noticed that if you let it shift to second before leaning into the gas so it puts a load on the motor and spools the turbos, you get that torquey thrust you’re looking for.

The ecm learns driving habits and if wifey drives it 5 days of the week it will never relearn your driving habits. If she has such a light foot that boost never engages....

Compare engine and transmission temperatures before and after boost is enabled and I bet you will see that boost won't happen on a cold engine

The Ford Performance Tune provides noticeable improvement in boost from a standstill. However, traction management serves as an antagonist. Sport mode improves throttle response and holds 1st gear longer so it sounds and feels faster but I have never timed it.

The best "sporty" feel for me comes with traction management disabled and the Ford Performance Tune. I don't think TM ever fully disables. Press and hold the traction button on the dash for 8 seconds or so. That will give you a little more freedom without feeling squirrely. It still intervenes in turns though. Most noticeable when accelerating into a turn so as to alleviate the turbo lag coming out of the turn (you are already in the boost). It still flashes in the instrument cluster and feels like it is meddling.

My CTS-V separates traction management from stability management which is nice. The former allows full torque to the tires and the latter lets you drift sideways. The combination can get you in trouble rather quickly. :ROFLMAO:

It's an off-road inspired vehicle that has the option to come with all-terrain tires & 35s stock. Full power availability from a stop is how you cause drivetrain damage. Ford doesn't want to be responsible for that. It's neutered in low gear for safety/longevity. Turbo won't be instantaneous either, but some of it is the tuning.

With my 7MT - even with Performance Tune, it still limits it to about 1psi boost in first gear. But in second and up - that limit is removed and it will go all the way to 21psi if you hammer it, and you go through first gear so fast anyway there isn't even time for the turbo to do anything.

Haven't tried it out with the crawler gear, but that hits the redline so fast anyway.

It’s the electronic tuning to control torque from a standing stop / aggressive traction control through torque management.

This is interesting. After you posted this I was watching the boost gauge while running some errands. With the 10A in D, as I drop the hammer I get boost in the 9-11psi range (max). If I do the same in M from first gear I get 0psi. You’re right, in 2nd gear it goes full boost.

I will try again and maybe record with a GoPro what’s happening. It’s difficult to watch the instrument cluster during WOT on the street 🫣

After posting I had some errands to run. 5 ×/- miles around town. Max 45 mph and only once did I have any boost and that was about 1-2 while crossing some RR tracks on an incline. Ambient temps mid 50s.

This AM went to get a Sunday paper and 45 in the garage and 36 outside. In Sport I had boost as needed from the get go. So it is not engine or trans temp related for the OP

When the engine is warm and you are at a red light. The light turns green and you floor the skinny peddle. Do you get boost in 1st gear? If so, how much? Does Sport mode change that?

What I casually observed yesterday with the automatic transmission and Ford Performance Tune:

(1) going WOT from a stand still with transmission in D, there was about half-boost max in first gear (9-11psi). After it grabs second, I get full boost (20psi) if I keep the peddle to the floor.

(2) Alternatively if I put the automatic transmission in M mode and the same as above, I get 0psi boost in first grear. When I shift to second gear I get full boost (20psi).

I will bring a GoPro today to confirm my observations yesterday.
