I just looked them up icon is 18mm and Ford performance is 16mm. You think the 3.0 rack will fail before the 18mm Icon tie rod?
No clue. But strength goes up significantly when increasing the diameter of cylinders.

16 to 18 mm increases bending strength by 42% (function of diameter cubed). No one can say for sure you will shoot your eye out kid (break the rack). But you just increased the risk of moving failure point to rack. Ford surely did a good job in designing tierod diameter that matches rack structural system level behavior. I would stick with 16mm rod.

Damn I didn't know it was that bad. What thanhell was Icon thinking. I bought them a few years ago never used them just sitting in the back lol.

When you have parts from 74weld it’s probably best to always have spares…
So you carry a CNC machine on the trail. Nice. Aerospace tolerances aren’t what they used to be.

Bummer on the rack. My soft ass would take all day in a cooled garage to replace rack. 84 minutes is intense. Tell the wife god job. She probably could have gotten it done in 60 if you weren’t in the way.

there is always a market for excessive fear. Most people don’t want to break or replace a tierod. And they won’t load steering enough to fail the rack anyway

guessing different materials were used between the FP and the icons.

No I am assuming identical materials. To be more accurate, the diameter change results in 42% decreased bending stress. Different materials will of course also change response by having different strengths. Just trying to make the point that small increases in diameter can significantly make the rods less susceptible to failure under the same loads, “strengthen”.

strength was actually a very poor choice of words for technical accuracy. But perhaps makes the point more clear to a broader audience.

totally got your assumption, was just putting it out there that a 2" baguette will not exceed the yield or tensile strength of 1" steel rod. I have a masters in engineering which makes me qualified to discuss the tastiness of bread

What it comes down to and I think @Turn Offroad said it best-“Ford spent millions of dollars developing this stuff, why would you change it?” (Paraphrasing)

Though that statement does kinda negate the entire aftermarket 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️

that’s not a bad idea. Baguette tierods. They definitely won’t kill the rack and if I am not wheeling with Miss sierrabronco I am likely to take way to long to change it out. Get hungry halfway through.
