Ok, I know minor surface rust on the powertrain and frame is common and not a problem. But my driveshaft is completely coated in surface rust and it’s driving me and my OCD crazy. I’m thinking of just soaking a rag in WD-40 and giving it a rub down. Would that do any harm? Anyone have any better idea?

My understanding, which could be wrong, is it's pretty easy to unbalance a drive shaft if you start sanding or otherwise removing material from it. They spin very fast, and even slight deviations can cause trouble.

I would definitely seek more advice before doing anything. You could turn a cosmetic issue into a mechanical issue.

I also might be misinformed about how easy it is to happen, but I thought I would say something.

Eastwood makes a good paint to go over it. Shouldn’t unbalance it much more that a little mud

… might want this… will last longer.

Boeshield T-9 is a premier waterproof lubricant and rust preventative developed by Boeing for long-term metal protection. Good on most things… picture is a 14 year old motor sprayed since new

This will kill the rust but will need something afterwards… T9, clear coat, paint

I've used rust bullet and it works great on rust. But I haven't used it on driveshaft. It can be thick, so I could see balance as a concern.

I've also used evaporust, which works surprisingly well. But it more eliminates rust, it's not a protective coating

IDK but Rusty Driveshaft would be a great country band name.
