I snapped a guide pin bolt on my rear caliper and ford says they don’t sell them and I have to buy the whole assembly. Anyone know where I can just get a new guide pin and bolt? Is the front the same as the rear cuz they sell a front guide pin kit.

Thanks. Looks like I’m going to have to. I was trying to get a new pin too just in case. Kinda dumb, I don’t need $150 bolt lol.

Ace Hardware has a good selection, just ask the guy to make sure you don't buy a $40 bolt. Like I almost did... Actually eight of them.

Back in the day I was a film student. We used Arri super 16mm cameras and there was a set screw in the bottom of where the film cartridge locked into place. I think it had something to do with adjusting the takeup claw on the film or something.

Before we started shooting with them, our film professor informed us that losing that bolt was a $2k mistake, as they found out one year (they found one for only ~$900 when a friend of the professor dropped his camera and ruined it while hanging out a window in a car chase shoot).

Apparently, it had a very precise and non-standard whatever and nobody else made them. Beware!!! lol We usually put gaffer tape over them in the equipment room so we wouldn't lose them.

I hear in the oil industry these specialty screws can get even more absurd in cost.

Make sure you match the grade of bolt. Not too hard nor too soft.

I would just go to any hardware store and match up an alternative bolt. Then see if you can extract the old one from the pin
Terrible advise. These are hardened, either 10.9 or 12.9. Hardware store bolts on brakes are a good way to have a catastrophic failure.

Unfortunately I have heard others making the same mistake. If you are replacing rear brake pads the torque specs are different, the guide pin torque is 22 ft-lbs not 45 as in the front.

you do realize hardware stores sell a variety of different grade bolts, right?

True. Although I don’t think I’ve ever been to one that didn’t have options
You haven't been to the store that's closest to me.

McMaster-Carr for anything super obscure or weird that you can't find in a local store.
Not the best prices, but they have killer website & it's easy to find everything & their logistics are top notch.

Anyone who works in manufacturing has them bookmarked...

I find the Ace in my local town has almost any metric size or type of bolt you need. But only in 8.8.

Tractor Supply I can buy bolts by the pound and it's awesome in just about any class - so long as they are SAE. Metric it's just pre-packaged Hilman crap and very little selection.

If only the two would merge and have a baby.... McMaster gets expensive if you just need a couple of bolts.
