Just picked up used ‘24 2D 7MT Big Bend with 15k miles. Tires are in great shape, but spare has never been used (and has a cover so it’s in good shape).
Is it too late to start a 5-tire rotation? Too much wear on the other 4 vs the spare?

Sas or non-Sas? What tires? I'd say get the Goodyears gone if you got 'em.

I would do it, rotate the spare in. some will argue that the tread depth difference is enough that you should not, and I get the argument, it's just that the consequences wouldn't concern me that much and the benefit of not wasting it out weigh those concerns.

That would be a massive waste, they are fine up to 45k.
Yeah you’re right about that. The OEM Goodyears on my 22 Wildtrak lasted 85k miles with five tire rotation. I was so pleased that I replaced them with the same model tires and I’m 20k miles into those. I know others don’t like them, but they were/are great for me, and the right price, and last a long time!

The tires in question, on this Big Bend (which I just picked up this week for my wife), are non SAS and I will rotate the spare in.

Appreciate the helpful responses.

Same & I've wheeled them all over CO with a few trips out to Moab & haven't had any issues. & they've done great in the snow too.

I'd say mark the spare so you know which one it is, rotate it in, & just make sure it stays rotated in a bit longer.

I am going to go with:

Keep the spare covered, don't rotate it in. Tires are already over 2 years old with only 15k miles on them. Unless you flog it, the tires are going to age out before they wear out, and keeping the spare covered will make it last years longer by avoiding UV damage.

What is the actual date code on the tires?

In that case, rotate it in, 100%. It'll get 4 positions, 20k miles during which all of the others get a break for 5k...so at that point, it will have 20k miles on it, the other 4 will have 30, and you extended the tire change interval successfully....and then don't put it back on the back when it is it's turn again, run it through the 4 positions again, and then it's at only 5k more than the other 4.

Start working it in.

Good plan, that’s what I’ll do. Thanks.

Wow! I've never put more than 15K miles on any tire ever! I do like to sell when they are at 10K miles looking fresh and try different brands / models.

Well, mine lasted 24k before multiple flats and a sidewall puncture required me to replace, even with a five tire rotation. YMMV, literally. Massive waste or not, the throwing of every pebble they come across is problem.

Dealer missed the spare on my first service and rotation, which was 5k. At next service they worked it in, saying it was fine to do so, which was around 10k. I’m running almost all miles on 2H default mode, so not much concern if off by a 32’th or 2. Interestingly they told me a TPMS was necessary as the tech said it was not on the spare. Clearly wrong info and the service rep argued it with me and even started the parts order, which would have been well over $100. All because the tech didn’t realize it takes a minutes and miles for the sensor to read.

@7k miles on my Sas, never rotated the tires, I don't believe in it on a RWD/AWD vehicle. Front weheel drive is a different story, the frot tires have more that 60% of the work on them, the rearss are just along for the ride. My Goodyears look like new with no abnormal wear. But to answer your question, I don't think 15k is too late if it makes you feel better.
