tailgate reinforcement weight limits?

Does anyone have a guess on what the weight limits are for the two types of tailgate reinforcement? I see one type re-uses the standard hinges, while the other types replace those hinges.

The standard OEM tailgate/hinges are rated for 133lbs. The brace type reinforcements that utilize the OEM hinges will make the tailgate more rigid however they do not increase the weight capacity. Others utilize a Raptor style hinge which does increase the capacity but I forget the number. Maybe try a search.

yeah search didn’t turn up any tested weight specs.

i was under the assumption that the current weight limit was because the tailgate would flex, but was not the limit of the hinges.

I’m really intrigued by the TOR tailgate reinforcement. I think I’ll buy one of those when my squatch needs new (heavier) wheels. I don’t know the weight others are rated for but from my research TOR looks to be the best.

At 5:40 into their video they lift the Bronco by this tire carrier… I think it’ll hold a lot of weight.

I have one still wrapped in the garage I haven't gotten around to installing. I almost tossed it up for sale just to clean the garage out.

Hmm, I couldn't find the Raptor tailgate weight limit anywhere. Makes me wonder if the Raptor hinges really are rated to carry any additional weight, or if they just have the accessory points and cross bracing built in.

Not necessarily. Having sat on a few ASTM committees to determine testing protocols for outdoor equipment the forklift test tells you nothing. I'd like to see if ASTM has a standard for testing this. It would likley include a dynamic testing component, and would likely measure downward dynamic force. Or what we in the industry refer to as a dynamic G-Force test.

I guess the question is what happens if you exceed the rating on the hinges? Everyone says the stock hinges are rated only for 133 lbs but I have like 230-250lbs of weight on my hinges and it’s holding strong with a Hammer Built tailgate reinforcement… no sag, no crunches, no flex

I've asked vendors directly before and the answer given to me then is that nobody's willing to test to destruction or assign a limit based on assumptions. It's a bit of a bummer, but I understand
