That is exactly how I got the idea!
Long story short. I do not recommend removing the air box. You will see zero gains on the stock turbos and it will feel sluggish driving around town. I did some logging with the air box, without and no air box and no filter. Logs didn’t show a difference at WOT, but you can tell a difference daily driving. I recommend keeping the air box on. I will retest when the more capable turbos are installed.

Yeah mine is back on now that summer is here anyway, and I didn't really notice anything material anyway.

I put my air box back on too. It kept tripping the IAT sensor code. Put the box back on and no more sensor issue. Iive and learn. I just wish it was easier to get the filter out to clean it.

I've been quiet for a bit, but that doesn't mean I'm not pushing on with the next round of performance mods. Long story short, In the beginning of this year I purchased some used OEM turbos from eBay and sent them over to TurboBay to do a full custom build. Larger compressor and turbine wheels. Essentially, something larger than what CRP has to offer with their Stage 3 turbos. 6 months went by and we decided to pull the plug on the custom turbos, as Garrett plans to release 2.7L compatible turbos soon and they outperform the custom OEM turbos all while being more cost effective.

OEM Turbo Specs:
  • Compressor Ind/Exd: 34 X 44
  • Turbine Ind/Exd: 38 X ?
Garrett Power Max Specs:
  • Compressor Ind/Exd: 41 X 52
  • Turbine Ind/Exd: 44 X 39

Also, the Garrett housings are a lot bigger, so they should be big enough to push the 2.7L to the absolute limit on E85, but if not then we can always build them up :)

Here's some pics of the "little" OEM turbos is anyone is interested:

The OEM turbos do a great job at providing a ton of low and mid range power, but they fall off hard at the top end as they run out of air. I believe they flow a max of 44 lb/min

I've also had a protype CV Fabrication High Mount intercooler installed and now that it's finally out I can talk about it. It's pretty much the same as the Wagner unit, but less expensive. So far, I'm loving it and sometimes see IAT2/ACT2 temps approach ambient after a short pull. It takes a bit longer to install compared to their stock location offering, but IMO it's totatlly worth it. Probably not needed if your Bronco is stock with some performance mods, but if you plan to go with a custom tune then I say it should be at the top of your list. 95% more core volume over the OEM intercooler.

I plan to post a dedicated write-up on it in a few weeks. I also made a super long install video, which I'll link at the bottom of this post.

Also, awhile back I purchased some stock Big Bend wheels and tires. I wanted to follow up to let everyone know what to expect performance wise after installing them. 2 tenths of a second improvement is what I saw in my Dragy data. Expected a little bit more, but not to bad at all.

Does the high mount intercooler work with their charge pipes? Unsure about the note re: aftermarket charge pipes on website.

Not currently. It’s something that’s being worked on, so when we have a solution I’ll update you all.

That intercooler looks so identical to my Wagner intercooler that I would be very surprised if it was actually different manufacturers.

They're probably made on the same assembly line :)

The biggest benefit going with CV Fab over Wagner is their lifetime warranty and price.

Is the CVF unit cheaper? It is listed for more unless there is a reseller with a better price.

The Wagner unit is currently $799 + $40 shipping + tax.

CV Fab is $859 (Use promo code "Fullspeed") for 5% off and you're at $817 out the door (No tax, no shipping)
