Yay, another Mobil 1 user! I got called out for not giving APA citations with purchase receipts with microscopic oil analysis along with the social security number of the oreilly counter dude that sold me the oil earlier by crenca the oil guy.
I'v used Mobil1 in several vehicles over the last few decades. Only one of those engines blew up, but I think the hole in the piston had more to do with it than the oil.

I remember reclaimed oil but not that brand. That was back when you could also buy non detergent oil. Many were changing their oil every 1,000 miles. I'd change oil when I noticed my oil pressure starting to drop. I noticed a difference in how long Penzoil would last vs Quaker State. I used SAE 30 in my Ford.
Most people used single weight oils. Back then you were asking for trouble if you mixed different brands of multi-grade oils. They weren't always compatible.

I still have the can spout. I should post it on ebay.

I also bought recapped tires, they were much cheaper than new ones.

I had a Chevy Nova in HS in the middle 80s that I poured that stuff into because it leaked and burned a quart about every fill up. I wonder if reclaimed oil is still sold…there are more than a few Bronco owners who might be sincerely interested

Just checked AI:

Why Choose Re-Refined Oil
    • Safe for engines: Major auto makers state that certified recycled oil does not void your vehicle warranty.
    • Same performance: It passes the exact same stress and wear tests as brand-new oil.
    • Helps the earth: Re-refining uses much less energy than drilling and making new oil from the ground.

Picked up a wix air filter last week from a local chain have not been to in forever and saw a wide range of synthetics from Pentosin (Germany) , Motul (France) Royal Purple, Redline, Lucas, Castrol (Canada) in product variations never seen before all with Countries of Origin. Approx 6 pages 36 items per page.

Euro and Canada petchem refineries are still producing PAO synthetic base stock.

Any recommendations for better that Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40? Pentosin is a new name to me

I certainly have not experienced this. I have a 4.0 SOHC powered 2002 Ranger that has 312K miles on it. I used the grade oil Ford specifies but it was full synthetic Valvoline oil. It still runs great and shows no signs of bearing degradation. It uses no more oil now than it did when new. I did switch to 5W-40 as it approached 300K miles feeling the bearing clearances must be getting somewhat greater by then.

I also ran extended oil change intervals of 20K miles. That was determined by oil analysis on my previous Ranger. I used a micron bypass oil filter to keep the oil clean. At around 280K miles I changed to 15K oil change intervals.

That engine did not have an easy life but was not severely abused either. It spent many miles off-road in very remote wilderness, towed my race car all over the country and served as my daily driver. I did not hesitate to take it to redline if I felt the need. I am more hesitant to do that now. It also has a custom tune that pushed out more horsepower and I used it.

My Bronco also has a micron bypass oil filter but change the oil when the oil change minder tells me to. Still using Valvoline full synthetic oil.
Old Rangers for the win. mine has 223k miles and have used different full synthetic oil brands for the last 16 years. I think people overthink and over complicate oil and fuels.

Too bad about PUP; I think M1 ESP is a good alternative as I doubt VAG or MB would allow a major reformulation without re-testing for approval. Same for the Penzoil Platinum Euro. The Dexos oils similarly will lose the Dexos badge if they reformulate to lesser base stock so if an oil still has that, it probably hasn’t slipped. Valvoline supposedly has a stready supply of Motiva Group III base stock through their Saudi Aramco parent company, so the Valvoline Restore and Protect seems OK too, although it was rumored to have used an unknown amount of GTL base, like PUP. The VRP doesn’t have many approvals or certifications other than Ford, Chrysler, API/ILSAC so it’s harder to tell compared to euro or dexos blends.

I bought a 2 year supply of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 in the early days of the war just in case the base oil quality of that blend slipped later. I will keep using it as the wear on UOA is down to under 1.5 ppm Fe/1k with it on my last few 5k mile samples. It stays in 30 grade with up to 2% dilution if just barely. If they came out with a 40 grade VRP I’d jump on it to fight the dilution. Also eyeing the recently reformulated Amsoil signature series 0W-40.

Same motor, same vehicle. 2001. I'm up to 240k. Pennzoil High Mileage full syn 5w-30. Wix XP filter. Lots of runs under 10 miles so I change every 5k. With my '22 Bronco I change every 3500 miles. Wix XP filter and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. When I saw this thread, I went to the local Walmart to see if they had any "made from" remaining on the shelf. Only "made with." I have oil for my next change on the shelf but went ahead and got the 5qt jug and a 1qt bottle for the next next change. Price only goes up these days.

I ride a motorcycle, shoot guns, sometimes walk briskly with scissors AND take my Bronco to the dealer for "free" oil changes using my Ford Points.

These are good points about what a continuing Dexos rating would mean.

I think M1 ESP is a good alternative

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall you wear metals never seemed to get below (maybe right at) 5ppm with MB ESP? In any case your results with Valvoline Restore and Protect is really good and I was thinking that would be my next formulation if PUP tests fall off. Thing is, RaP has disappeared off the shelf of my local Walmart recently so....good thinking about stocking up as well. I grabbed enough PUP for the next two changes but it is the new formulation

Also eyeing the recently reformulated Amsoil signature series 0W-40.
What's the story on that?

For what it is worth myself and others are getting really really good (exceptional really) results with PUP out to 5k - at least with the "made from" & "made with" formulations. In about 3k I will test the most recent (let's call "made with who the hell knows" formulation :ROFLMAO:) formulation that's in my block now and post results.

I wouldn't bother with European rated oils. They're formulated to match some BMW and other specs that don't apply to the Bronco. The Restore and Protect oils are designed to remove varnish that shouldn't be in a new(er) engine, so I'd take a pass on them. Synthetic is a must though, and not a blend.

The active chemical(s) in Restore and Protect is for now a trade secret. However according Valvoline, and I suspect they are right, it is analogous to the polyether amine in (good - there are plenty of bad ones) fuel injector cleaners such as Chevron Techron and the better gas formulations (Chrevon, Shell, etc.).

In other words, if your engine does not need what it does it does not hurt for it to be present...it is not an "acid" or something that should be used "sparingly".

Given @LSW wear metals results Restore and Protect looks like a very good option for any Ford ecoboost regardless of age...you might want to run an analysis to see if this is true for you however...probably...
