I remember years ago reading about a small town judge and police officer that were caught in a red light scam. The light was hooked to a manual switch and could be flipped straight to red with no yellow. The cop was in waiting to write it up. The judge would quash any complaints about it in court.

I think they eventually ticketed an FBI agent which lead to an investigation and charges.

I remember hearing about that. A lot of these rural speed traps are built around similar types of official corruption.

I am a retired administrative Captain, and was one of a group of LE executives who lobbied our State Reps to enact laws that:

Make the Infraction a “civil” violation.

FYI, if you fail to pay, they cannot report it to the credit bureau, insurance, or have any impact on your driver's license record.

If you fail to appear, all they can do is file a small claims suit. They will not do that, because they can only collect $50, and they will spend hundreds trying to get you to pay.

If you fail to pay, you will receive a letter from a law firm out of state, like Dewey, Cheatem, and Howell, which will threaten you.

Just disregard. I have gotten about 10 of these, and never paid them.

PS, make sure these are the automated camera tickets. By law, there must be a disclaimer on the ticket listing the information I provided.

It should be in bold uppercase letters.

I'm pretty sure this varies by state and jurisdiction. Good luck not paying your ticket in Orgon.

WA does little right in general, but one awesome thing is a form you fill out if you get a camera ticket denying that you were the driver. They request that you identify the real driver but it's not required. Poof, ticket dismissed.

It might be possible to just toss the thing completely without ramifications, but the form is an easy CYA.

A good radar detector would have alerted you to the photo camera.

Illegal in Virginia. About 23 years ago I was driving in VA and got pulled over. My detector was unplugged on my passenger floor amd the a-hole STILL gave me a ticket for it!

Here in Indiana the City of Clinton has speed limits of 29 MPH! This was done years ago by a Mayor who did this to create a Local Ordinance Violation. This allows the City to keep the fine money since Official State Speed law limits did not get them any money from tickets!
