Yes, easily a decade. A decade is 10 years. I don't remember the last time Ford used an external replaceable filter, but it was most likely in the early 2000's. So give or take 2 decades.

Yeah, I was trying to be funny, us old guys have trouble admitting we've been in this century for more than 2 decades. I do know I had an '05 Explorer with one and my '09 E350 Motorhome chassis and maybe my '18 E350? First vehicle I had without one was my '05 Wrangler.

The mid 90s is when you saw Ford really embrace the in-tank pump/filter and start switching everything over. And sadly that was 3 decades ago.

We're fortunate that getting bad gas from a gas station is extremely rare. I remember when it wasn't.

You're more likely to have a problem caused by improper storage. Solution? Don't hoard gas!

Don't hold it against the shop guys when you get your Bronco back with 1/4 tank. Dropping a FULL gas tank to change the pump doesn't sound like fun, so I'm sure it will get pumped out to the "catch basin", AKA lube tech Steve's Nissan Altima.

We will find out. It finally went in Thursday. Yes fuel pump. Yes warranty at 59.6k miles. Thankfully.

However I’m now waiting on the part as they could not order it until they verified even though I asked them to order it over a week ago. Hopefully get it back Monday.

My tank is full, not sure if they have to empty or not but I’ll trade warranty for $70 in gas any day. Haha.

I changed out my 21 Badlands fuel pump and gasket yesterday. Not terribly difficult, but I don't recommend it for a novice. Did it on the floor, no need to jack the badlands with a mild lift. No special tools needed. Used wood blocks to crib the tank down and then back up into place. Lower and raise it gradually to take care of connections as needed. Worth it if it keeps me off of the side of the road.

They shouldn't need to empty it, if anything maybe just a little. I replaced one the other day that was like ~90% full and didn't have any issues

Is the fuel pump inside the tank submerged at the bottom of the gas? I can’t imagine putting an arm into the gas to change the pump but maybe I’m wrong.

Anyway. My Bronco is back. Runs great! Picked it up this afternoon and went straight to Costco for tires. Looks awesome imo.

It is, but as part of an assembly that comes out the top. The only real reason to drain the tank is to drop weight to make it easier to handle, a non issue in a well equipped shop.

And thank you for posting your problem. It may have saved me from being on the side of the road or in the mountains somewhere. I see you have the optional Badlands wheels. That's the only option I ordered on mine, best looking stock wheel IMO. Those Stones are chunky for sure!

So your saying the pump assembly can be removed and exchanged with fuel in the tank without a spill?
