Ordered the part as well, I figure it would be best to get ahead of the issue.

Are we thinking 2023 models have this from factory?

The wife’s bronco has been in the shop 3 times for charging faults. Every time the harness was corroded beyond repair. Had to be replaced. She’s never driven through mud. All I can say is, they don’t build stuff like they used too.

Where in Florida? And how close are you to the coast?

The answer is obvious, disconnect generator, start engine, generate code, spray in ample mud, reconnect generator, drive to dealer, show TSB.

Tell them that you were able to take the generator apart and get it working again long enough to drive it in.

😂 😂 😂 😂

I’m in Jacksonville. I’m about 20 minutes from the beach. I done have that salt water or salt wind hitting the truck.

I presume you meant "don't". I was curious why the corrosion on the harness. You live far enough away from the coast so the sea fog isn't a concern. Many people who are transplants down here (not saying you are) don't realize how corrosive the salt air is even if they don't live at the beach. There is a thread here on the guy whose interior is rusting. But he opted for the open top overnight for multiple days on his beach vacation. The salt-laden condensation would easily cause that.

By the way, you may be interested in the 904JaxBroncos group. Events and meetups are coordinated on Facebook.

I bought a used 2010 f150 that pulled a boat. The only thing rusted on the truck was the trailer hitch. The rust chips coming off the hitch are serious, lays called me for chip advice that's how bad it was. I from NJ so I know salt, and the new brine solution they are using on the roads an absolute beautiful disaster.

The wife is on the facebook page. I don't do social media. So far we haven't been able to make any of the meets.

I would think a dealer could order the shield before a failure will occur. The TSB seems to indicate that the shield and generator will be replaced in the event of failure. I don't think there is any issue or redesign with the generator. @flip might be able to weigh in on the issue.
Just saw it this morning. The wording is very vague but if you read it, this is a replacement only if it exhibits the issue. Issue meaning, it has to come in with a bad alternator or charging system message. I know this isn't much comfort but they aren't denying a repair due to fording through muddy water which I think is good because they're admitting this shouldn't happen under normal off-roading operation.

A couple other points for those who've had alternators fail and had to pay. Under a recall or warranty extension program Ford will allow for reimbursement if the customer had to pay for a part that is now covered (most FSAs do but usually have time or mileage limitations). Since this is a TSB, it does not say prior failures could be eligible for a refund but it also doesn't say that they aren't. I don't know if Ford will do a refund or not but I do think it's worth trying for someone that had this issue, had to pay and has a dealer willing to try to run a refund.

Final point. If a failed alternator, charging system message or visible mud in alt is the precursor to doing the TSB, I don't see many dealers doing this TSB without having the condition. Ford can see all of the warning messages/codes which means the dealer wouldn't be able to support the repair (lie about codes present) since Ford could easily verify this and deny the claim after the repair was done. It is not possible for us to claim just the shield under the TSB without the alternator and belt.

IMO, this borders the lines between a recall and TSB. Maybe it should've been a program where the customer doesn't have a bad alternator, attest they do go off-road (water fording) and the dealer installs the shield. If it already has the issue (failed alt, warning message) and is still within BTB, they do the full TSB. To me, it would be much cheaper for Ford to install shields at this point rather than pay for a tow/rental and repair after it happens. Until we're directed otherwise, I'm not going to be doing repairs unless it has one of the conditions. I hope they revise this to provide more clarity but until then, will follow what is published.

FYI, there is a meetup tonight at a Buffalo Wild Wings in San Pablo.

And there is a reason why people buy sh!tboxes to run on the beach. No worries about preventing rust when rust is the only thing holding it together.
