I live in New York and my 2022 2.7 Base Sasquatch has some surface rust building up on the undercarriage. I was wondering who else has experienced this and what have they done to address the rust? I was looking into a dry ice treatment but I am not familiar with it. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. She lives outside and we had a brutal winter this year.

I have found that if you are constantly getting the truck muddy from off roading, cleaning and spray paint is the way to go.

Otherwise there are plenty of professional undercoating companies that would be happy to help you with a Cosmoline or Lanolin product to prevent future rust. You could DIY but its messy and need specialized tools.

Where’s the guy with that laser or dry ice blasting setup I keep seeing in those Instagram videos for cleaning undercarriages?

If you live in a place where they salt during winters and you haven't been getting your vehicle undercoated every year or two, then this will happen eventually. My Bronco was the first vehicle I've ordered new to my specs and planned to keep forever, so I took it to get undercoated at a local place with woolwax in fall of 2022 and every following year before winter as well. You'll definitely thank yourself down the road when the bottom side isn't all cancer.

What kinda rust are we talking about? Pics would be useful. I had some rust on mine the day I brought it home, brand new and only a few weeks from the factory. Not on the frame but on various unpainted parts underneath.

I'm in Ohio, there's a shop here that does the dry ice and also is a certified WaxOyl applier. I did the WaxOyl in October, a couple of week after getting my Bronco. I'm hoping it will serve me well. Only time will tell but the reviews and research I did for this seems like I will have no problems.

Cleaning up whatever has started would be very hard and costly and being a 22 it's probably still not that bad. Hose it down. Clean up any loose stuff and apply Fluid film, Woolwax or something similar. Like mentioned do this every year or every other year. I've heard NY is bad... vary bad. Vehicles are basically gone by year 5-10.

As others have said there are numerous oil based undercoating options available that all work well and some work better than others.

Just stay away from the old school Ziebart style that is like a tar based that over time hardens up and cracks open letting moisture get in behind it. It is a recipe for disaster.

I've used Waxoyl, Fluid Film, Corrosion Free, Krown and Rustcheck over the years and all of them have been effective. I know of Woolwax as well but it is hard to find in Canada.

The rule of thumb with these products is the less they drip the less they creep into all of the nooks and crannies of the vehicle. So the drippier ones can be more effective but require more re-application and can be a littler messier.

If you already have surface rust I wouldn't consider the Waxoyl but go with one of the drippier ones. If the rust is minor surface rust the drippier can soak in and potentially eliminate it or at least stop it in its tracks.

The Waxoyl is best suited to brand new vehicles or ones where the rust has been removed.

This is why I sent a used car from California out to Tennessee for my daughter. Kept looking on Carfax and 1/2 the cars were imported from NY, Penn, Ohio, or Illinois.

Well worth the $1600 to ship it. A 2009 Toyota would have been a complete rust-bucket if it had been from NY, etc. (or WI where I was originally from). I can find em that look like new underneath here (NorCal). I just sold a 1996 Toy Truck with no rust underneath. Kind of amazing.

I do not envy you folks out there in snow & salt country.

Spring: Clean underside, wire brush rust, rust converter, Krylon semi-gloss black
Fall: Repeat spring, then Fluid Film

We bought a JK Rubicon last fall that had pretty nasty frame surface rust and started this procedure. Undercarriage came through Wisconsin's winter great.
