Manual Transmission Fluid Garbage

On the fill, are you going to do the 2.5 quarts or fill up to the bottom of the fill port? I've seen both, same with the Mustang MT82. Full is actually about 1/2" below the port.

Assuming if it’s brand new, there won’t be much residual left. So the 2.5 or to the fill. Whatever comes first.

I'm assuming overfilling to the bottom of the hole will not hurt anything like it would in an engine? Would just blow out the breather if an issue?

It takes 5.1 pints. Unsure if that’s to the fill hole or not but that’s the correct amount.

I think I’m going to tackle this later today. Outside of VWs, I’ve never changed transmission oil. Assuming it’s pretty straight forward?

Yeah pretty much.
Like has been mentioned, just make sure you can remove the fill plug and have the ability to get the new fluid in before draining the old.

Well, that was easy enough. Hardest part was having to grind off the stupid inset washers that came with the Mabett transmission skid. But, that’s another story.

I feel like I got 3 quarts in there. I couldn’t see into the fill hole - but, I just kept pumping until it started to weep out. It doesn’t help that the 64 oz containers of Syncro Shift don’t have any volume indicators on the container itself. But, there is about half of the second container remaining.

One thing to note - service manual states to put it in neutral before draining…I forgot to do that and dropped it mid-drain. Seems to have not been an issue.

Shifting into 2 and 3 is SO much smoother. Looking forward to a nice long drive to really feel it out.

Also, wanted to note. The old oil was very brown and not as red as I expected. I meant to keep a nice sample and even send it into Blackstone…but, my clumsy ass knocked it over while making room before filling.

I really need a QuickJack…

Do we know exactly how widespread the grinding issue on the MT’s is? Obviously, within the bubble of this forum, we hear quite a bit about it. But I’ve also seen some folks on here say they have had no issues. I also have not seen any YouTube videos crop up about this issue. Could it just be a B6G bubble? Or is this more widespread? My MT is being built Wednesday 4/12, and the forum bubble has me a little freaked out.

No doubt, the 184 page/2760 post ‘grinding sound’ thread and videos have us all more than a little freaked out… reading the horror stories that neither the TSB nor tranny replacement worked is unnerving to say the least… but we do have Hope knowing Ford is working the issue, rather than disregarding as the common ‘Getrag Rattle’ of old…

I’m old enough to have swapped nv4500’s in very early 2000’s

Talk about oil wormholes! Probably another big reason I walked away from manual transmissions

I feel pretty safe on my fill. I would just give a few extra pumps after I reached what I thought was the 2.5 mark until a little dribbled out when I was removing the nozzle.

I used Redline in all of my VWs - so, I was tempted. But, I couldn’t find many current Mustang/Ford experiences out there. Maybe I didn’t dig deep enough.

Can’t be any worse. I’ve had good luck with RL MT oils in my Toyotas.
