Just ran a tank of 93 and am getting a hair over 1 mpg better vs 87. Cruising on the interstate just seems a bit more effortless for the motor with better fuel. Economy wise though 87 seems just fine for me most of the time.
I got a jb4 tuner and you can run blends with a few gallons of ethanol mixed in to gain some extra boost.
Black diamond SAS with stock Goodyear's:
ROUGH MPG (I drive like a grandma most of the time)
93- 21.5
87- 20.5
E30 19 ( roughly 2 parts 93 : 1 part e85)
Guess I better quit using sport mode. 17.6 😁

I didn't realize that my driving was that aggressive.... But 16.3 mpg and never used anything but premium seems a far cry from most peeps on here. 23 Wildtrak for reference

I have run 87 in my 2.7 2 door Sas for over 3 years now. No issues, runs great and I average 22.9 MPG. I drive with a light foot and the 2.7 has plenty of torque running 87.
Wow, I thought I was fairly steady. I have not come close to that.

I ran 87 for the first year in my 2 door 2.7 Sas and it was fine. I tried running 93 for 6 months and there was really no difference in mpg so I went back to 87. Then I added the intercooler, charge pipes, FPP tune, intake and 37's and switched back to 93 with the tune. I'm getting better mpg with all the changes but I want to wait until the fall/winter to verify the true difference. The winter vs summer gas makes a decent difference in mpg so you can't really look at a short time frame especially in the warmer months. I leave it in normal mode 99% of the time and most of my driving is around town 25-45 mph. It's the longer 55-60 mph runs where I can get around 22 mpg but regular daily driving is 18-19.

I have a Wildtrak with the 2.7. I'm thinking that what you call "twitchy", others might call "responsive" :). I will sometimes run 87 myself, and see nothing wrong with it. But, there's definitely a little more power to be had on 93.
I agree with what you’re saying. With the higher octane, he’s getting spark advance a little quicker, which would make it feel more responsive at throttle tip-in.
If he likes it better, He likes it better. I don’t blame him for going to 87 if he likes how it drives better.

My work commute is flat roads, temps 80-93, mostly 50-55 MPH using CC, a few stops in between. Most of the time AC is off although I do run it when it's over 93. I have a 2 door, it is lighter than a 4 door and the base model so it's one of the lightest ones. I am stock except for MBRB dual CAT back exhaust.

It also depends on where you drive...city/expressway driving will give you lower mpg than rural highways. Ours primarily gets driven on rural highways, maybe up town, and out on some trails. I think it's been on an expressway 5 times.

2.3 4-door with 35’s and 4.46 gears here on 93 and always sport mode. Kinda heavy foot. I’m averaging 18.5. Not super happy with how it shifts at low speeds some of the time, but I’m thinking the Ford Performance tune shift scheduling will take care of that hopefully.

I do live at 6000 feet ,with a fair amount of slope around obviously, and right next to the interstate, but hardly ever use sport mode. Still seems a bit thirsty to me.

Sport is too fun tbh. 4hi just pulls 😎
Its wild, when you switch to sport and keep the pedal in same spot literally speeds up quite a bit. (Raced a vette the other day, he of course beat but gave him a run for his money, hence 17.6 mpg.)🤣

It’s opening the throttle body more. Just a change in throttle mapping, not actually increasing power. Your right foot doesn’t really control the throttle body in modern vehicles. The ECM does.

But JT lives in Florida - the flattest state in the US ;) According to Google, the total elevation change in the entire state is only 345 feet! I live in the hills and it’s a 700 ft descent&ascent round trip for me to go anywhere and I don‘t drive many miles on the highway. So I rarely get above 18 mpg with 87 octane.🙁

Everyone has different driving styles, elevation changes, types of roads, lives at different altitudes and climates etc that makes comparisons a little pointless, but it is interesting to hear people’s experience with trying different octanes.

It's weird to say, and first time in probably 25 years that I used it, but I put in 87 octane instead of the premium 93 octane recently (Costco / Top Tier), and I have to say....I like it better! I know.....it's weird to say, and I'm sure many will disagree (with good reason), but I have found that the car is a little less "bucky" on the accelerator with the 87. Mine is the 4.27 rear end, and the tires are 65 series (275) SL rated, so pretty light. I've normally driven in Eco Mode just to calm it down a little bit. Decided to give 87 a try since the engine is able to handle it. I definitely notice the difference, which is not bad when the intent was to make the throttle response a little less twitchy. I'm back to "normal" mode and it drives perfect for me. The 2.7 has more than plenty of torque in general. The car definitely does not feel "sluggish" by any means. So if you're like me, give 87 a try. You may like it a little better. With the dual port injection system, carbon is not a concern, and a can of fuel treatment will actually do some good to keep the valves clean.
Same for me. ⛽87

I’m not purposely putting inferior gas into any of my turbocharged vehicles.
