First thing I saw on that relay was the liquid tape šŸ˜‚ Shit is annoying to apply but once you get a good five coats on there it feels pretty safe.

The relay certainly has a reassuring clunk to it when that sucker turns on. Something I thought of while researching 500A diodes-I built a little jumper lead that can bypass the relay and fuse if need be, just in case either of them goes down and we still need the winch. Just 1/0 that can reach from the terminal block to the discharge side of the fuse. Keep it in the bronco toolkit, just in case.
LOL yeah it’s a b*tch to put on. Didn’t help that my brush looked like part of the bristles had a major stiffy. 🤣

Glad I thought to put a towel down before starting. More glad most of it’s hidden from public view. BUT it was the best tool for the job and got it done. I applied a few coats last night and added some more today. I probably didn’t do myself any favors leaving in my garage. We got snow earlier in the week but it managed to get to almost 50 yesterday. I had the garage open, it felt like a heat wave.

Speaking of useful tools, bought a set of flex head ratcheting wrenches, mainly for those MT4x4 reinforcements. The 13mm paid dividends on that relocation bracket. It’s a real b*tch to reach all loaded up. Will buy some cheaper HF variants for the trail tool bag.

And yes, mine has a distinctive clunk to it as well. Good idea on the bypass. I may consider that too. I have some left over wire. Hmmm.

Fabbed my own mount for the Safecraft pb3 extinguisher and quick release mount. I'm personally not a fan of hose clamp held extinguisher mounts. Nothing against those who use.

Another good reason to protect your winch circuit with a fuse and/or relay-

Braptor owner decides to go crazy while towing you with a flat strap on the sand dunes and rips your bumper out of the OEM bumper mounts 😬 Talk about making an already bad situation worse. Luckily (?) it pulled the wire cleanly off of the battery terminal and there wasn’t a severed 2G hot wire flopping around the engine bay.

I dunno which to be more surprised about, the pulling force of a Braptor on sand or the weakness of that bumper...

Bumper held together just fine šŸ˜‚

It was the notoriously weak Ford bumper mounts

Shitty part was they successfully pulled it all the way out of the trail over all kinds of obstacles using the white four door on portals and the flat strap. He was getting close to overheating so while cooling off the mystery raptor owner offered to help. They originally planned on swapping to stretchy rope for dunes but didn’t. Apparently the raptor guy stopped while going up a dune, backed up a little(?) then floored it. Not sure if he didn’t realize it was a flat rope or what the deal is.

Well, I meant the mounts... But the driver-side does look a little bent up on the bumper. I guess maybe passenger side let go first and bent the driver side until it let go?

Any way you slice it, it's only a flesh wound! I suppose they applied some duct tape and carried on.

Yeah I’m actually not certain what happened to the side and forgot to ask.

Holy crap - that totally $ucks but consider yourselves lucky it was just property damage - all that energy was enough to tear off the bumper which was thankfully heavy and fell to the ground. That could have potentially ended with other parts flying around and possibly resulting in personal injury.

Clearly, that Braptor had the new ProCal tuner. 😜

Seriously, hate to see stuff like this. Makes me real hesitant to let others ā€œhelpā€ if I’m stuck. Just a thoughtless bad decision that was lucky it wasn’t worse.

Yep. recoveries should never be rushed & the amount of applied force should always be applied incrementally. Start low & work up and avoid violent actions 🤠

Was this at UBB Sand Hollow on Friday? I watched Matt’s Offroad finish the recovery from atop the hill.

Yeah I dragged someone out of the sand later that same day. The stuck guy started unwrapping his new flat tow strap. I said no we’ll use my kinetic rope. Two gentles tugs and he was loose.

I hate that sand.

Thought I would share a spreadsheet I threw together comparing price impact when upgrading wire size. A few things to note:

1. This is based on my specific scenario of relocating my winch solenoid under the hood.

2. If sticking with 2 AWG, I showed some credit for using the included Warn 2 AWG wires. FYI, it's about the same cost as the Warn relocation wiring kit I posted in #100 above, with the 20% off coupon. The Warn kit also includes an extended small ground lead from the controller to the winch motor that would be a (small) cost you need to add to the spreadsheet values.

3. Pricing is based on assembled cables from BatteryCableUSA. This includes ends, heat shrink and wire cut to the foot specified.

4. If you have longer runs, already own the tools (or can borrow them) or have future big wire needs using completed assemblies may not make sense for you. I considered DIY, but for me, it was about a wash cost-wise.

5. Feel free to download a copy and tweak for your specific needs.

Hey @nolimits will batterycablesUSA add an inline fuse holder? Or do I just get two shorter lengths of cable to go from a 500amp relay ->inline fuse holder->battery terminal ?

Yeah that was at UBB. Poor guy

We went with 500A relay basically right off the positive terminal. Was very easy to make a mount off the battery tray with some flat metal straps.

I never directly inquired about that option so I can’t say for sure. My experience with them was they were helpful so maybe a quick call would be useful.
