Changing your own oil?

Jk don't do that. I usually have 2-3 used oil jugs of about 12-15 quart capacity I'll fill and once a year I head to the municipal home waste disposal for drop off. It's free but takes about an hour round trip. Most auto stores, at least around me, will take uncontaminated oil and filters.

First oil change let the shop do it. I've found with our last vehicles the original factory filter was on gorilla tight and being on your back under a vehicle doesn't always give you the greatest leverage.

Seriously though, the thought has often ran through my mind that crude oil used to set in pools on the surface, that is till we found a use for it.

I always take my old oil to the Advance Auto down the street. I don't know if it's a NY thing but anywhere that sells oil has to take old oil back for free to be recycled.

Same in Calif, if they sell it they must take up to 5 qts. back for recycle free. They just pour it into a tank out back to be pumped out later, then give you the containers back if they are larger than a quart.

There is no federal law that requires this, only per State. For years I thought it was a federal law, makes sense because part of the price of the oil is a tax to pay for the recycling of it. But alas, I moved to a state where this is not the case. One small town has zero recycle places, have to drive to the next.

For those of you planning to change your own Bronco's oil, do you plan to just slide under there and figure it out yourself? Or will you let the techs do it first and pick it up from there on after?

I don't imagine the Bronco being too different than say, a Ranger. But this is coming from someone who has never changed oil before a day in his life

So the best thing about the Jeep forums are the write ups on how to do you own mods and maintenance including oil changes, diff fluid changes, etc. We’ll have to get organized here and hopefully do similar work.

I don’t know the 2.7 or 2.3 Ford motors, but it should be straight forward - especially since the Bronco doesn’t need to be jacked up to get underneath and drain the oil. It takes me less time to change my Jeep oil than it would just to drive to a place to have it done, and I know the condition of what came out, that the oil plug was put in without being stripped, and exactly what kind of oil and filter went in.

Keep your receipts and maintain your records though.

I like to do 10k oil changes. Been doing this for a long time, using Mobil Extended with Black Labs verification.

However with that said, being that the Bronco has Turbos, I may look into Amsoil which probably is the best oil out there, but overkill in Normal applications (IMO) But if it meets specs and gets me my 10k, might be worth it.

I recently checked the valve clearance on my KTM 1190, swapped out valve shims to the correct gap, installed new chain and sprockets, changed the oil, changed the brake fluid, changed the clutch fluid, cleaned the air filter, and thought about changing the coolant ... that being said I am going to take the Bronco to the dealership

I am also curious about Amsoil. My neighbor runs it in his diesel.
I've been a Mobil1 guy for years, never let me down.
And used oil? it's been said a dozen times already here, but most auto parts stores and satellite trash locations have a used oil collection point.
Or save it for bar oil for a chainsaw until you amass more than you will use in 6 generations.
Then it becomes an issue getting rid of larger quantities.
Or do as they did when I was young, living in TX. Pour it on the gravel road and make it an "oil top" road.
*EPA would frown on that last part and it is a joke, but it is amazing the things that were done over the years vs. where we are now with understanding the impact it has.
Old times:
Car quit on ya?=push it down a hill or into the creek.
Used oil?= pour it in a hole or burn it in your trash barrel. Or on a dog with mange. OR on a dirt road.
Dirty hands?= wash them off with gas or paint thinner.
Engine flush?=Let that puppy drain on into the grass.
Old battery?= chunk it into the ocean.
Pile of old tires?=make planters out of them, throw them in the river, burn a giant pile of them.

Man times have changed.

I did heavy-duty fork seals last year - best upgrade ever - eliminated the annual change of a leaky fork seal, which is a PITA.

I have been riding for 58 years, every make of bike, and always do my own maintenance & repair, from brake pads to a full engine rebuild (Honda 450 twin & 1977 GL1000). Tore my 2013 F6B down to the intake to install the McCruise CC system, now that was a PIA, all that Tupperware! Rebuilt the top end in an Audi in my garage, only had to take the heads in to be shaved. Will I be doing my own Bronco work? you damn Skippy!!

Slide under there and do it myself. My Dad didn't teach me either- he was a very talented musician although could not turn a wrench. So after a summer at my uncles shop in Maryland when I was like 12 years old, I became fascinated with cars. When I returned after that summer Ii spent most of my spare time at the library reading book after book about engines, cars, trucks etc. I wanted to be a mechanic. I started with lawnmower, minibike and go cart engines. Bought tools every week up the wonder collection of tools and roll aways I have now. I graduated small engine and started with working on my first two vehicles- a 1971 and 1970 Bronco. Mechanic didn't pay much so I went to College and became an engineer as my main job. I pursued mechanic on the side. Since then I have performed all routine car maintenance at home- even some medium to have jobs- repairing axles and rebuilding an engine once. So reading is a great way to learn, then just do the work and gain experience. I am still learning to this day. But I enjoy doing all my automotive work. I am super meticulous and know it's done right.

Chet, you buried your KTM in a mud-hole a while back, but now you're too much of a dandy to crawl under a Bronco to change your oil? What happened to you?!?
