I’ve noticed CarPlay seems to overheat my iPhone. If I used wired and position the phone so it’s not wirelessly charging it still gets pretty warm.

if I disable CarPlay and just use Bluetooth for audio it cools off.

my other vehicle doesn’t have this problem with CarPlay.

edit:

Disabling wireless CarPlay fixed my issue. I have to use a wire now but it’s much better than overheating. I don’t know if it’s an iOS issue, a ford issue, or a combination of the two.

STEPS TO DISABLE WIRELESS CARPLAY
  1. Settings
  2. Connectivity
  3. Wireless app projection
  4. Set the wireless app projection toggle to disabled.

Wireless CarPlay is a huge battery drain, so some heat is normal. Combined that with the crappy wireless charger Ford put in the bronco and it can get very hot.

22’ Wildtrak w/Lux and use CarPlay all the time with the wireless charging. Been almost a year and I haven’t experienced any heat issues or significant battery drain. It actually charges my phone up rather quickly even when using it with CarPlay. CarPlay is a little wonky connecting at times but a simple on/off toggle of the Bluetooth setting and it connects.
How old/new is the iPhone you’re using? You know how Apple likes to screw around with their updates forcing people to upgrade their phones.

I’ve not experienced any abnormal temperatures on my iPhone w/ CarPlay. I connect via Bluetooth and then am wired to one of the center console ports. Can confirm that CarPlay is a battery hog

I still don’t see the point of Carplay, other than NAV, I guess? But i can manage to move about without needing my hand held…

And I can see why the phone would get hot because you need so many systems turned-on: data signal, bluetooth, Siri, etc…. Carplay just doesn’t seem to offer anything unique.

if you're not using the two USB ports at the bottom of the center console,
the phone is probably still using wireless (but being charged over the cable).

even plugged in to those, i noticed that sometime if i unplugged, CarPlay continued to work (so it was still a wireless connection even though wired)

Yep it’s a known thing but unfortunately not really an “issue” because it is “working as intended.”

Aside from Wi-Fi and CarPlay using a lot of power and therefore requiring a lot of juice to power the phone, the placement of most wireless chargers in vehicles doesn’t promote good cooling for the device. The car mfr who puts an active cooling fan on the wireless charger pad will change the game.

My son and I are road tripping currently from Nashville, headed to the Off-Roadeo in NH and have been using CarPlay and the wireless charger the entire time. Both our phones get pretty hot, but not enough to trigger a warning on the iPhone 14. But his phone is also getting hot just using the USB cable, too.

A cellphone is basically a computer. A computer with very limited cooling capability. Add a phone case and it gets even worse. CarPlay and AA put a steady load on the phone and it heats up.

About all you can do is make sure the phone has room around it so the heat has somewhere to go. If you can get cool air moving over it, even better.

Which model iPhone do you have? I’m using an XR.

I guess you don’t really use your phone as much others. Thanks for the reply i guess?

If you have more than one vehicle, it’s nice (and safe) to have them operate nearly identically. I also switch between music/audio apps, and trying to do that with the phone while driving is illegal and unsafe.

I’ll need to test to see if it’s the wireless CarPlay that’s causing the issue.

It’s not really like a pc. More like a small tablet. Lots of dedicated, optimized hardware and dedicated optimized software.

No case here. Like i said, i use CarPlay in other vehicles without this issue.

And heat up is an understatement. The apps stop responding and the phone eventually stops working completely until it restarts or i cool it off.

I can use maps, Bluetooth, mobile hotspot, and charge it wirelessly outside of the vehicle without this issue.

I said computer not pc. Although the meaning is essentially the same to most.

It has a cpu, video processor, memory, and runs an operating system.

Having dedicated specialist devices is little different than many computer system boards that have wifi, Bluetooth, sound modules built in. With the capability to add virtually and device through standard interfaces such as USB. PCI, etc.

Is has more devices baked in, but it's essentially a computer.

I guess I’ve never really understood how it’s safer to fiddle with apps on a screen while driving vs a phone—to me, they’re both unsafe. I make adjustments at a stop light. Seems reasonable to me.

I have the same build as you and my iPhone12 gets so hot on the wireless “charger” which causes the phone to be useless. Yours doesn’t get hot at all?
