Broken strut for rear tailgate (terrible design!)

Hell, does anyone know the Ford part number for the strut replacement? I have a 2021 built in the last week, so not sure if the Redline Tuning ones would work or not.

M2DZ-78406A10-A, that part number has never changed or been superseded.

I used the ones that don't fit on my rear glass struts...sonat least it wasn't a total waist of $$$

Correct, it is not the right thread because the threads are self tapping designed to go into plastic. The metal end fitting we supply does work, even though the threads are not perfect. We worked with an engineer that specializes in gas struts and this is the solution that we came up with.

Have you found a metal end fitting for the body side? I've been using your tailgate limiter for a while but your kit only includes the fitting on the door side. Had the plastic fitting on the other side break and can't find a good replacement.

Unfortunately, we have not found a replacement end for the body side. We are still on the hunt!

This also happened to me, they replaced it and it’s been fine. I do worry every time I open the tailgate now but it’s been solid.

Similar thing happened to me except I was rear ended last night and the strut popped off from the ball joint

of course the rear ending was what caused it but still not a fun experience

Mine pops off regularly. Especially when it’s cold as the strut takes more force to open. Think it’s time for a warranty replacement!

Well, The other fixes that I was talking about was the bar ends that I bought that didn't fit, and the hammer built strut that I purchased. (That was way too strong for that backgate.)

What I ended up doing was just fixing my strut for free. The metal piece that squeezes the ball, basically I removed that, took pliers and squeezed it to where it would create more tension, and put it back together. Hasn't popped off since.

If that didn't work I would just buy another strut, they are cheap

By "The metal end fitting we supply does work, even though the threads are not perfect", do you mean to gently force the ends on the thread?

I forced mine on and it has been good for over a year

Mine felt like it bound up within half a turn and I was convinced it would break free and leave me with buggered threads but maybe I’ll try again. Since I discovered the weakness I haven’t had any more problems with the replacement OEM plastic fitting because I now open the door less forcefully. I really just wish it used anything other than a hydraulic strut.

After 8 months and 4,000 miles, the strut on the tailgate ripped out of the threads when trying to open it to 90 degrees at normal speed. The female receiving end is PLASTIC. The threads pulled right out and stripped it. It seems to me that this will eventually happen to 100% of Broncos. Hard to imagine what Ford was thinking with this super fragile design. Totally inadequate.

I just had this happen to me yesterday. 1,500 miles new as well. I have a trip to the dealer on Wednesday so hopefully they will replace this under warranty.

Did anyone ever figure out if there was a metal end that fits? Mine is a 23 with an Aug or Sep build date.

Mine did this a while ago. I epoxyed the thing back on and it’s been good since

Granted the stops in the lift have all blown out as well, so it just acts to slow down the thing a bit when it flys open. I should break down and get a new one, it’s just a small step up from a limiting strap as it is

I do use the M2M tailgate limiter - that’s probably the only thing that’s saved my taillights from getting smashed, although the time the end came off that couldn’t save it

I just got a new OEM one, and treat it more gently than I used to. I wish it just worked like a car door where it wants to stay in 2-3 positions, and have a limiting strap.
