High Mileage Brake Pads

I have a 2022 Black Diamond 2DR 2.3L 7MT Bronco. I just pulled the brake pads to replace them because of high mileage, 122938 miles. I was surprised with the amount of life still on the pads. Granted a lot of the mileage was highway.

That is impressive.. hope to get the same life out of mine on a 4dr 7MT BadSas but I’m sure with the larger tires I won’t be as lucky

Wow, and they look pretty even too. I found my rears went fairly quick, I ended up changing them around 60k. The fronts still look almost new though.

If you drive below 65 on highways and use cruise control, totally possible. I got around there (up to 24.5mpg on a trip to Oklahoma) taking back road highways and basically staying off the accelerator and brake as much as possible.

True story, my 2010 Chevy pickup is still on it's original set of brake pads. I took it in at 160k and they were like, you still have lots of pad left. Maybe even into the 220ks. They told me they see that a lot on GM brake pads and lots of highway travel; one guy got 270k before he chickened out and had them replaced. I'm at 186k and so far no sign of any issue. Maybe 120k of that is highway miles and I try to coast to a stop, etc.

I'm just saying it's been a long time since I've seen those numbers. A rack and RTT will bring it down pretty fast. Add in some heavy tires and it just keeps dropping.

Yeah, that's true. I get ~15.5mpg with 73lbs tires and heavy duty armor and driving around town more. You'd have to be pretty dedicated to maintain anything above 18mpg IMO.

That sure beats mine, at 23k I had almost nothing left.
I do a better job now at turning traction control completely off when I’m on the trails driving it like I stole it.
I expect I’ll make 30k on this set.

It's all in your driving style. Lower speeds, easy on the throttle and easy on the brakes leads to higher mileage and longer brake pad life. Long trips without stopping also extend both.

I averaged 17-18 in my PowerWagon, most of my trips were back and forth to work on rural highways, so marked @ 55mph. Only a few stoplights, and always coasted down to lower speed limits when entering small towns. Pads were replaced at 95k along with calipers, because the caliper pins froze up and the brakes got mushy. Still had plenty of pad, but since I was there they got replaced.

We don't drive our Bronco enough to give any feedback - it's a '24 with less than 10k on it.

Have you calibrated your computer? Have you compared the MPG it says with calculated MPG from your own records?

Yeah, the on board is about 1.25-1.5mpg high compared to manual calculation. It also takes at least 200m before the onboard one stays somewhat accurate (with the above subtracted).

The computer doesn't self calibrate. Mine read 7% high until I calibrated it using Engineering Test Mode to adjust the Actual Fuel Economy (AFE) bias. On my Bronco the screen was the last one in Engineering Test Mode. Btw it's a fun screen, you can watch the Bronco count fuel injector pulses. I used my records for a few thousand miles to calculate my new AFE bias.

This is pretty much what mine does as well.

I never calibrated mine either - I should, but ... not that important really. I know the computer lies, and I know what MPG I get on average (also about the same ~15.5 as @userdude). But good to know the ability to fix it is there if I were so inclined.

I also need to fix my fuel tank at some point. At 1/4 tank a fillup will be anywhere from 11 to 14 gallons, when I ~think~ it should be around 15 - so something going on with my float I think.

Ford found my rear pads to be below acceptable during a recent oil change. 23,778 miles .2021 door BD. It has seen some moderate hills & trail runs is all. Nothing crazy.
