Frame vs body mount slider steps?

They looked like they worked good to me. Flexed right back where they started. Those do kinda sick out more than Metalcloak. More they stick out the more leverage being put on your pinch seam and tub.






Frame mount. I think you're good.



Look at the flex on those body mount sliders at SLOW speeds. Look at the dents in the lower panel. There is NO WAY I'd take body over frame.

I like those metal cloak if they're the ones with the kick-out I'm thinking of, but I am running RCI just because I got them for a song back when I first got the bronco and the wait time was minimal.

Definitely not calling either bad. Just pointing out the extreme differences in the two. Would body mount be fine? Probably. Is it worth it to spring for frame mount? I would... Transfer of energy and all that.

As the body and frame are supposed be able to move independently is there any concern of body damage by using this design?
Since they connect at the frame outriggers at the same location that the body attaches to the frame they aren't attached to the body per-sey...hence my "hybrid" description. They are pretty stout, you'd have to hit something really hard to damage the body.

Weekends and Waypoints had some nice body damage from his Metalcloak sliders at Super Cell this weekend.

I need new sliders and at this time I am not sure who to buy either.

Off the list
Metaltech- Bent/Dented outer tube
Metalcloak- body damage from the slider
Next Venture - Naked one deformed- u shape
My modified factory- 2" square tubing is deformed- u shape
My eBay DIY rock sliders for my XJ have over 10 Rubicon trips on em and zero deforming haha. 6 years, $250 at the time. DOM. These fancy companies got nothing on em!
Time to test out my Califab sliders

Just some FYI: I have the GOAT sliders and have tested them out fairly well. They work great and are Stout, I have had the weight of the truck on them sliding over obstacles, and they did not bend or damage the cab in any way.

They do mount to the under structure of the cab, and do not touch the pinch weld at all. I went with them because they were easier to mount then the frame mounts I had looked at. No, they are not frame mounted, but I do not feel the need to change them out.

The Tubes and the mounts are all thick wall and plate, Roll Cage material tubes.

I noticed they all flexed somewhat. And the dent's were already there. I will probably get the bolted frame mounted in the end As I usually go for more than I need. I was looking to see if there is/was a balance between cost and function.

I’ve seen body mounted ones take blows to rocks just fine and support the weight of the vehicle on one side so I’m not sure why people get hung up on body mounted being so inferior. I also still have my brand new goat fab ones for sale in the classified section if anyone wants quite the deal. Last price drop.

I have the RCI frame mounted steps. I literally use them to jack my Bronco up and they do not move at all.
The have two versions of the frame mounted steps. One is almost flat (which I have so it's more of a running board/step since I don't do rock crawling and don't need the added clearance of something tucked up closer to the body.
They also make a set that has a greater angle towards the body so it's tucked up on the side. You still have a "step", but it's smaller.

IF you are questioning and aren't sure if the body mount will do the trick, the added cost of the frame mounted could pay for themselves very quickly.

To many people in this thread are not realizing that a lot of these sliders are not quality steel or designed right. I use my slider to get around rocks, drag them and smash them. With such a low clearance platform rock sliders will take a massive amount of punishment. I put my money on stock rock rails more than 1/2 the aftermarket options.

I have been eyeing some DIY DOM tubing ones. I just like the look of square more! Not sure I want to build as set, its kind of a rabbit hole and I would go overboard on steel. My version would be 150 pounds a side lol.

I'm probably going to pull the trigger on these sliders this week:

They are body mounted, but look really stout and there was ZERO movement when they lifted the side of the bronco off the ground with a forklift. Video is in the link. The fact that they look to be stout, tuck up nicely while still providing a step, and in my case I will be putting a rock on the sliders maybe a half dozen times a year made this an easy decision for me.

I'd pull the trigger on frame mounted if there was an option tucked up closer to the body and not require drilling/welding. The LOD destroyers look great, but I have no interest in drilling the frame. How I wish Ford had nuts welded in place on the side of the frame like on my old Xterra. Would make slider development much easier.

Ford claims the OE rock rails can take 1.5x the weight of the vehicle. I believe it.

Any serious off-roader knows to go with frame mounted.

If you will be slamming the vehicle down on the sliders, or using them as actual sliders, then go frame mounted.

In my case, I won’t be slamming them down, maybe the occasional slide against dirt. So body mounted is fine for my use case.

So my sliders bolt to the frame at the same spot the body does...so are they are both frame mounted and body mounted 🤣

Seriously.... People get way too caught up on frame mount versus body mount when they should be focused more on the quality of the slider. People buy steps or things that stick straight out (which make for a great leverage advantage) and think they are protected.

But Yeah, if you are doing hell n back, or ultimate adventure, you probably really want frame mounted.

I have been shopping around for some slider steps. Ford states the OE rock sliders will support the vehicle. I know frame mounted should be better. Here is the question. Frame mounted has approxamatly 2 feet of unsupported hang at the rocker panel. would'nt the leverage of that cantelever make them more likely to bend into the rocker if you dropped hard onto them?
Frame mounted is the way to go. Deffinately much stronger... If your concern is possible damage to the slider; imagine what the damage would be if you went with body mount sliders. :unsure:
