Does anyone know the torque on X going in/on to Y?

I am posting this because I've heard this question so many times.

The company I work for just released a free app, not freeware, not soon to cost money, just free (no ads) that allows you to specify the diameter & grade of fastener and calculate the recommended torque. Our engineering team developed it because we got asked these questions all the time and figured they would just develop an app that answered the question.

iOS: Bolt IQ+ on Apple App Store
Android: Bolt IQ+ on Google Play

Hope it's helpful.

I have a chart for bolt size/torque and tap/drill size along with inch/metric measurements in the lid of my toolbox but this is another way to do it…thanks

Given that it includes grades and dry vs. lubed, that covers a lot of the needed bases.

Another one I've seen goes farther and was (seemingly) capable of accounting for large differences in the bolt and substrate materials, say a grade 8 bolt into tapped 6061 Aluminum.

Installed and checked it out, then uninstalled...no grade 9 , lame . Aircraft fasteners are my favorite and there NOTHING here regarding them. IM OUT. I used grade 9 over grade 8 whenever I can.

Don't worry, even real aircraft fasteners aren't real. FAA released this a couple days ago.

Good request. Especially since the very close metric equivalent 12.9 is already there.

That does not sound like it's going to be cheap to rectify due to the hours spent on the scavenger hunt multiplied by size of fleet. Then add the variable of the size of stores (stock) of suspect hardware is on hand in need of replacement

I only use grade 10. grade 9 is for nothing but amateurs and posers.

Thankfully it isn't mandatory or regulatory, and the FAA isn't considering it a safety of flight issue. Out of curiosity, I looked up one of those part numbers and we have several thousand on each of our planes. We also use reputable distributors (not Amazon or military-fasteners.com) so I'm not too concerned.

Sorta, true AN aircraft bolts are FAR more ductiile and less brittle than 12.9...and are NOT equivalent. 12.9 is considered "brittle" while the AN bolt has "excellent fatigue, and handles cyclic loading, shear, and stress well". The 12.9 is considered "poor" at vibration resistance.

Also AN bolts have a tighter fitting thread, which affects the torque needed to get them snug. They require less to get the same clamping forces.

i remember that years ago when I worked at Ford. 12.9 grade fasteners were not recommended for many applications due to the brittleness factor.

Prior you said grade 9, obviously AN is not the same as grade 9. As I stated 9 and 12.9 are close enough in all specs to be interchangeable.
