well..... portals.... there you go...
I know four guys personally that still broke their CV’s/differentials with portals installed. One on 74W, one on Werewolf, and two with Tibus. And I don’t know a lot of people with portals 🤣 The whole “portals provide drivetrain stress reduction!” claim is blown way out of proportion as a selling point. I think the Dissent Offroad guy snapped a rear axleshaft on his 74W equipped Japanese rig. They aren’t all rainbows and unicorns, despite what the manufacturer selling them wants people to believe.

Ok, so do we know of anyone with the upgraded FDU and 32 spline shafts that broke them?

I think maybe Broncbuster but I could be making that up. I don’t know of any besides the one I might be inadvertently lying about here. I want to say at the very beginning both Spicer and RCV had issues with the CV’s clicking but that’s since been resolved. Or at least with ours we haz no clickage. Maybe @BigMeatsBronco had it happen to him?

Man... I'm going to want an update on that. that's a lot of $$$. But if it works, will be worth it long term. I'm thinking of trying limiting straps next... I don't need too much flex, it's more clearance.
It is a huge amount of money. I went nearly the whole season trying to avoid doing the upgrade. A third CV break on day one of a big event in October I'd been looking forward to all year was the final straw.

I’m not certain how many level 8 trails we’ve taken our bronco on…three. Maybe four. Plus bonus features that humbled wranglers on 42’s….but no breaking of axles with this unit so far. Spicer axles though, not RCV.
you are near oem CV design geometry in the front. You don’t have a 5” suspension lift. Portals for the win. 😂

Except for the guys that still broke theirs even with portals.😉 Though driving style might contribute to that too…

Whaat. I thought portals solve all issues known to man. Ok. Maybe not. But definitely better than a 5” lift. Gonna beat that to death.

I apparently just can’t seem to get past the 5” lift. have I already mentioned that. 🤔 ok I will stop now.
I do need to admit that I forgot about the lift by the time I replied. 5” lift is gonna put a hurtin on any CV unless they do a drop bracket. Another accessory I’m not a huge fan of.

Sorry about all the 5” lift comments. Just couldn’t resist.

yes indeed. The diff drop is one of those things that just seems to be a great idea but difficult to implement. Sure it helps CV angles but also jacks with CV plunge. The oem CVs just aren’t great and don’t really have great plunge tolerance either. Can’t really drop the diff to far without possibly generating other issues. Not a big fan either.

@SierraBronco This is the way!!! That torque is nice and our 10 speed can handle the RPMs through the gears. Sport mode it tends to redline when giving it the beans, but such is life. (Ford procal installed)
People seem to still have this notion that portals are 2:1 ratio or something. Happened a few times over the weekend where they would say “oh dang. Probably sucks to be limited to 49 mph!” Well…that would not be ideal but that certainly isn’t the case. Portals have their own problems but with the bronco top speed isn’t one of them.

The ring and pinion will break long before the 32 spline CVs will...(ask me how I know)..I'm actually ordering my RCV "custom" Dana 60 sized outboard CVs today...they are rated for tires up to 47s!

@ only 22% reduction @ portals, I agree. My mogs are 2.13 (with 3.54 diff gear), so it's ballpark "100%' difference between axles and tire (obviously I'm very limited on top speed).

They also use a double cardan for steering axle, which I've never broke @ 6200 lb and 43 stickies. I've always wondered why no one tried the double U-joint style instead of CV's. Maybe packaging I guess. (and you'd need 4 of them with 8 joints, UGH!!)
