Can you explain to a noob what a catch can is and where/why it's installed?

Also why are brand new cars leaking oil?
The benefits are mostly related to cleaning off the intake tract and intake valves. The oil can catches some of the oil that would be going through your intake, coating the superheated valves with with oil. The oil cokes and adheres to the valve stem and also the intake tract. Over time this is detrimental to the engine. This is common among Direct Injection engines because the fuel injector is AFTER the valves, it's inside the combustion chamber.
Engines with Port injection or injectors situated before the valves don't have this issue. This is because the fuel cleans the oil off the valves and intake tubes. So port injection engines see virtually ZERO benefit from the catch can, the $ investment, and the labor to install.

So....The 2.3 DI engine sees a benefit, however this gimmick is just completely usless on a 2.7 with dual Port and Direct injection.

They are installed in the intake tract and plumed to the crankcase pressure ventilation system.

The oil that your asking about in the intake system accumulates two ways, by bypassing the turbo seals (like at startup for example), and is also a ”mist” of pressurized air that comes out of the crankcase and is vented back into the intake tract. This oily mist coats everything in its path with oil.

On my porsche for example the manufacturer does NOT use a catch can but DOES have an oil drain in the lowest part of the intake tract, and they DO recommend draining that oil every time the oil is changed...this is NOT to prevent oil from coating everything, but instead to drain it so that too much oil doesn't accumulate and cause hydro-lock or cause the air to percolate like a bong while the air passes through the fluid.

Hope that helps.

I do also recall back in the day on pushrod 5.0 engines people running a oil water seperator or catch can setup as the oil mist from the pcv can cause detination/ping/spark knock. and under boost/N2O/higher compression that is not a good thing. Even if buildup is not a problem on port injection trying to burn that can cause some issues.

The 2.7 may not need a catch can to avoid buildup. However, if one is going to turn up the power it might give more wiggle room or small safety net with more boost. Blowby does exist in the 2.7 as well and that is regardless of injection type/combo.

correct me if I’m wrong, but can’t you just run seafoam through the engine every few thousand miles?

you could, but why not prevent the oil from building up in the first place.
Remove the source.

I wish I had photos of my Porsche's intake when its air/oil separator (basically a factory catch can) quit working.
THe poor car was downing in its own oil.
This made me a believer real quick.

Only if you suck the Seafoam through the intake manifold. It cakes on TOP of the Intake Valves and in the runners.

Anyone see Ford denying an engine warranty claim with this installed? I know they have to prove the mod caused a failure but who wants to deal with a dispute. Would like to see one offered from Ford Performance under warranty.

I second this. Also wonder how many people have had issues that did not install catch can and ran their truck/cars with Ecoboost for 200k miles..... I have not personally heard of this oil build up causing failure if you don't run catch cans but I may be wrong

Doubtful unless someone really screws up the installation.

So after about 800 miles and about a month of running their catch can, here’s what I’ve been able to collect.
It looks to be a little more than a teaspoon which is about 5ml in Canadian dollars.
What’s more surprising is the apparent “gunk” in the bottom. See photos
Can was installed at about 3300 miles and first oil change was at 3800 miles.
Appreciate any feedback.

EDIT: after wiping the can out, I could not see the solids on the paper towel.

I put one on my 1.5L Bronco Sport after the first oil change at 2500 miles. The first check at about 3500 miles the can was empty. Ever since then it collects about half a can every 1000-1500 miles. I change oil every 3-4k. I'm at 11,700 miles now.

If you're fine with oil vapor entering your combustion chambers and lowering your fuel's effective octane, go for it. Preventing buildup on the back of the valves isn't the only purpose of a catch can.

Here's the 5oz of milkshake I pulled out of my Coyote after 3000 miles. I guess some people would be okay with all of that just hanging out in the intake and mixing in with fuel.

How much crap you will find in your catch can also has to do with your driving style. More boost means more chance of blow-by. I'm just jealous all of you guys got your catch cans, been waiting on mine forever. At least I got the bronco.
