Mishimoto catch can install with pics, tips and tricks

There haven't been many updates to this thread in a while, however, I just installed the @Mishimoto catch can as my Bronco mercifully came in (nearly 3 years after ordering).

I'll say that the crank ventilation tube is an epic PITA to swap out unless you have the hands of a 14 year old child. Also, the outlet hose was shortened for a cleaner install and more master cylinder clearance (MT)

Lastly, as it's for the 2.3, I made a tech tip thread which will be massively beneficial to folks who are doing their own oil changes.

about damned time! i have a 2.3 mt as well (not yet shipped but built as of yesterday) and was looking at this product. a little wary about the difficulty you mentioned with the ventilation tube.

First off: CONGRATS ON YOUR BUILD!!!!! Hope it doesn't take 72 days for delivery like mine did.

Secondly: I have mild rheumatoid arthritis so the job was worse than it would have been for others. It's certainly doable and to me it was either being comfortable with the $400-700 intake manifold cleaning every 60-70K miles, or this. IMHO, the @Mishimoto catch can is a high quality product and worth the price even though it uses a sintered bronze filter (my least favorite, although my prior experience with catch cans was for track vehicles where oil temps make sintered bronze an inefficient choice).

I do my own vehicle maintenance so a catch can on the 2.3 is mandatory (IMHO), and not worth it for the dual-injection 2.7. Plus the fender liner clip change was needed either now or before the 1,000 mile oil change.

Oh, BTW, one thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the factory crank case tube is not fixed. The outlet will rotate on its axis while still firmly affixed into the housing. I was unable to affix the hose when attempting to snake from above.

Instead I re-oriented the tube to approach from below, from the fire wall near the transmission (still feeding through in an appropriate path through the existing hoses). It took ONE TRY when approaching from below to obtain a full seal and gave me a portion of the hose to press forward to help seat the clip. Then I re-routed the house upward as it will easily spin at the connection without friction.

I do my own vehicle maintenance so a catch can on the 2.3 is mandatory (IMHO), and not worth it for the dual-injection 2.7.

I beg to differ. I have the dual catch can from Mishimoto on my 2.7, I check it every 3-4k miles and both cans are over halfway full each time with nasty crap. It’s well worth it especially in conjunction with other modifications and running higher boost levels. I may not need it to help keep my valves clean like 2.3’s, but it still works very good as an oil separator and keeps any oily deposits out of my intake/CAC pipes and intercooler.

Holy hell! Haven’t been on the forum much lately……too busy surviving the Wyoming winter and suffering through whatever urine flavored adult beverage (what passes beer here in Wyoming) on sale in Cheyenne. Then this post caught my eye…..not because of the exhilarating content (couldn’t give 2 shits about catch cans), but because @Rick Astley finally took delivery of his Bronco. Nice! And all this time I thought he was just a bored poser hanging out in the forum to entertain us all. Never considered the possibility he’d actually pair a Bronco with his Ranger. Congrats Sir! Welcome to the Bronco/Ranger club…..that is if you still possess your Ranger.

Yessir, an actual bronco order was in process the last 3 years.... traded the Mazder in on Bronco, Ranger is too cherry to abandon ship.

Dykes to cut cable ties
A small screw driver for the upper clip on 7 Mt with advanced transfer case

PS: you don't need a floor jack, stands and there was nothing out of the ordinary for installing on a 2.3, 7MT with 4A (speaking as somebody with a 2.3, MT, 4A).


I'm just here to complain about your complaints. Don't be the sour grapes department, it's assumed somebody has a modicum of technical abilities when working on a vehicle.
