I recommend using the funnel that came with the Bronco under the floor in the cargo area. It fits perfectly.
Should be back there with the jack.
Good point, and I do carry it when I'm not around my tools and things. If at home, I have something like this:
Ford Bronco Fuel fill up mishaps (Overflow) 1726464573241-g5

Part of my post was to simply gripe about "expert" regulators and bureaucrats who have to impose ridiculous counterproductive product standards on us. You know, the "administrative state."

on that note, pay attention to (ahem) similarly shaped but blue colored cans that are designed to carry and pour water...

This happened to me once. It was a pump at Kroger that dispensed the gas very slow (took between 5-10 minutes to finish). Because of that, I think the pump was faulty in general.

Nothing like that happened before or since (I'm at about 20k miles, issue happened around 15k). I did talk to my dad and he said that it was no big deal (he's smarter than me, but also caveat is that my situation only happened once).

As other's have said, if this happens at one specific gas station you go to get fuel, I would try to go somewhere else and see what happens.

But, if this happens at every gas station you go to, I would take it into a dealer and get it looked at.

Does anyone else have this problem when doing fill ups at the gas station? Nearly every time I fill up I have to catch it before it overflows. I can never set the nozzle to automatically fill up and it click off in time. When I do it manually I can sometimes keep it from overflowing but that is because I know just about how much I need and I take the last few gallons very slow. I am just surprised on a new vehicle that this would be an issue. I didn't know if it is something just with my vehicle or something others deal with. Thanks.

I’ve never had an issue. But when it does click off it is full.

No issues here.

Maybe occasional premature activation of the shut off, but usually changing the angle of insertion, or not fully inserting to the hilt helps with that.

Are you getting the nozzle all the way on the filler?

Does it happen at one particular pump?
I put it in as far as it will go. I’ve noticed pumps around here have a “collar” on the nozzle that prevents it from going in like the old pump nozzles used to. It seems pretty standard anymore. My father’s ford F150 does not do this when I fill up. When it comes out, it’s quite a lot and very frustrating obviously. I’ve tried different stations and different pumps. I’d say it happens 9/10 times. I’ve resorted to just getting it close to full and stopping but it’s just a guessing game.

This makes me wonder now because Kroger is where I usually go. I’ve tried a couple of others in town with same results but most all of mine are done at Kroger. Maybe that’s where the 9/10 it happens comes in.

Does this happen at more than one station? Nozzles can vary. I would try another station and see what happens.

In NY all the auto-fill pump nozzles have been disabled - so not an issue here. It's probably just an issue at the pump you use.

Never happens, and I always round up to the nearest dollar as well.

Hopefully it's a quick fix, Buff

I'm not allowed to pump my own in NJ, but it always clicks off automatically while the attendant is distracted on his perpetual phone call with god only knows who.

I will try a different station today and see what happens. I want to be able to use the automatic clicks off but we will see. Just for clarification, in the past it does it if I use the automatic click or if I do it manually and listen for it to overflow. I just never can catch it in time. As soon as I hear it getting close it just comes out violently. If I can get it to do it all the time and at the filling station the dealership uses I may be able to get them to look at it. What usually happens to me is I drop the vehicle off for them to inspect it and they say, "could not duplicate the issue". Thanks everyone for your help. Hopefully I can get this fixed. I am trying to teach my son how to fill up his future vehicle but things aren't going well using my bronco for this.

***Edit***
I filled up at a new station and no issue. I believe it could be Kroger and possible one other fueling station that I have used in the past. It’s still annoying, I just may have to avoid those stations in the future. The anxiety of filling up after you wash the rig sucks lol.

yeah there’s a separate small pipe in the pump handle that’s used to detect when the nozzle is submerged. If it’s clogged it won’t work right and you get that mess.

notify the clerk the pump is malfunctioning, but the other takeaway if they are all like that is they aren’t maintaining their pumps.

For what its worth, I fuel up frequently at a Kroger near my parents house and only had the issue once. But, given your reply and other update, it seems the Kroger in your area might just have poor maintenance with their fuel pumps.

Whatever the actual issue is though, I'm glad it seems to be resolved and hopefully it never happens again in the future!
