My 2.7 2022 Bronco had the typical 2-5 second cam phaser rattle after cold start (more than 4 hrs of sitting).

After a deep dive into this annoying issue and weighing my options, I decided that removing the engine under warranty was not going to work for me. Too many disturbed systems and still might fail to resolve the issue.

That said, and after reviewing the owners manual were it warns against engine oil additives, I wanted to share that I used 4oz of a popular friction reducer added to my latest 6 qt oil change.

I am happy to report the cam phaser issue is completely gone. The Bronco has so far sat for up to 3 days between starts. It appears the friction reducer leaves sufficient lubrication in the cam phaser assembly to keep things lubed and quiet.

This alternative worked for me. YMMV

Or perform the:

Clear flood mode, hold down the gas and brake at the same time and press the start button. If you hold the button it will continue to crank as long as you hold it. If you just press it, it’ll crank for like 5 seconds or so.

Yep. Familiar with the 5 sec prime function with feet on the brake and gas pedal. Useful but not what I want to do on every cold start.

What product did you add to the oil?

I used MOA after my cam phaser issue developed. It helped for a little while but the sound returned and further application of fuel viscosity additives did not correct the issue in the long term.

I feel it's a good idea to add lubricant to those parts and will be adding MOA going forward to avoid another failure of these components.

I will be the first to let you know if anything changes.

Note that this product was used as an engine oil additive, not a fuel additive.

Still as it should be…….whisper quiet on cold start.
Can’t figure out the video at the moment. Must have been a software change.

This is great info. Thanks.
Is there any way someone (dealer/mechanic) can tell if an oil additive was used?

The 2.7 has a belt driven oil pump (sits in oil sump), I would not use any additives.

I would be worried about degrading that belt because it happens on other eco boost engines. I also have bad cam phasers and am scheduled for engine removal.

What am I looking at?

I am not sure if the 3.0 has a chain or belt for the oil pump.

I know for a fact that the 2.7 does have a belt that sets in oil. on the 1.5 EcoBoost the teeth on the belt separate and eventually clog the oil pickup screen at around 100k miles.
