Took everything apart tonight with the intention of swapping the carrier for the replacement I picked up off EBay. Pics provide more detail, it was definitely corrosion of the inner sleeve, I believe it’s aluminum. My guess is water got between the plastic and outer surface of the aluminum tube. Maybe it froze, maybe it was extremely salty and corrosive. Had to cut it to free the camera, was too swollen to slide out.

To make my night great the replacement I picked up is incorrect, the camera tube is too short for the “digital” 350 camera. If anyone has a lead on a 35” digital spare tire carrier let me know.

I'm willing to bet that the camera has nothing to do with the mount. Only SAS or non SAS or BRAPTOR are your choices.

I saw a video on Youtube recently (Vertasium) about what happens when tin comes in contact with a tin polymorph and it disintegrates.

Probably not at all related to what is happening here but it reminded me of it.

UPDATE

IT’S GETTING WORSE !

IMG_1785.webp
You didn't expect it to get better did you  ? Kind of like how all those granite kitchen counter tops end up cracking when they use to use steel bars to reinforce them. The seals would fail the steel would rust, causing expansion and the stone would break. As long as it continues to corrode, it will expand and the damage will increase.

Looks like the zinc blocks on my old aluminum boat after a season in salt water.

Yeah, if aluminum is fastened to non-stainless steel it will corrode rapidly in salt water.

Even that can be a problem, at least with some alloy combinations in some environments and without protection. The further apart the alloys are on the chart, the greater the difference in potential. Carbon fiber composite paired with magnesium in a wet environment is a very bad idea!

Cool graph.

I learned the hard way when I screwed my flatbottom battery tray to a rib with non-stainless screws!

Continues to get worse, so I took it into Ford to get fixed. As it progressed my camera still worked but it was not aimed correctly. Since I use my Bronco to tow commercially, I use my camera quite a bit to line up the trailers.

Bad news not covered by warranty, and the cost is $1,100. Good news though, since I have the Ford extended warranty through Granger the full cost is covered. Yay !

Do you have the back up camera recall? I wonder what they'd do if they attempted that work and found that knarly situation. Probably replace it and charge you $1100.00 I guess.

My understanding is that the camera recall is a software issue. My camera worked fine, it was just not pointing straight back anymore.

There might be more than one recall on the back up camera, but I know at least one of them calls for replacing the camera. I had mentioned that earlier in the thread because one of the local dealers here said that they often crack the tire carriers performing the camera replacement. @Ducati1098 thought they were incompetent.

@Montana Bronco, glad it's covered for you.
For anyone else, $1,100 is over 1/2 the price of the Expedition One Bumper & tire carrier system that replaces this item 🤠 .

My claim went through all the steps, Service, Dealer Owner, to Corporate. The corrosion complaint was denied. FORD stated, due to the fact that the tire bracket is an accessory part and not part of the body. Therefore it is not covered.

Yeah, Factory accessory that is on every Bronco made. If it was considered for Bumper to Bumper warranty they would probably say, Sorry that part extends past the bumper :sneaky:
