So weird!
I wonder if an animal was putting stuff in there for whatever insane reason, but I dunno...
I really wish you the best with figuring this out, and getting it repaired.

Corrosion of metal encapsulated by plastic and moisture/salt gets in there. Just like I discovered with my irrigation solenoids.

I was taking my gear out of the trunk and pondering the tailgate rattle. When I closed the tailgate and started looking at the spare something didn’t quite look right.

Upon closer inspection the housing for the rear view camera is swollen, burst and deformed on the left side. But the camera still works. Has anyone seen anything like this? It’s puffed like a bad LiPo battery, as far as I know there is no battery in there. So maybe a short or over heating? Not that it would ever get enough use to over heat.

It looks very much like aluminum corrosion product in the pic. If the plastic cracked then salty road spray got in there between the aluminum and plastic...then some form of electrical potential difference, maybe from dissimilar metals contact or maybe the tail or license plate light wiring.....the aluminum will go off. It might be a little strange to be like little gravel pebbles. I typically see it as flaky or powdery product...or the absence of structure that USED to be there.

Is there any carbon fiber in your spare tire mount/tailgate system? Carbon ( very cathodic) and aluminum (very anodic) do not play well together in hot/humid environments.

Stock tire carrier and all the assemblies etc.

I've found a few replacement tire carriers, just the tire carrier which is all I need(granted when pulling the camera it'll probably fall apart, but at least theres a recall for the replacement), now I just have to figure out if the carrier part is the same for the standard rear camera and the "Digital" 360 camera

Well, you got that DD light bracket on there, which could be a playa. The wiring is definitely swapped around. Stainless or "Corrosion Resisting" steels can be considerably more cathodic than aluminum. And some aluminum alloys/tempers are far more sensitive than others. 7075-T6 was a great high strength alloy, but it was a corrosion queen.

I'd think there was some form of defect in the carrier that kicked it all off, though. Hopefully a new one won't repeat. It just seems kind of unusual which leads me to think there is something unique about your tire carrier situation.

Took everything apart tonight with the intention of swapping the carrier for the replacement I picked up off EBay. Pics provide more detail, it was definitely corrosion of the inner sleeve, I believe it’s aluminum. My guess is water got between the plastic and outer surface of the aluminum tube. Maybe it froze, maybe it was extremely salty and corrosive. Had to cut it to free the camera, was too swollen to slide out.

To make my night great the replacement I picked up is incorrect, the camera tube is too short for the “digital” 350 camera. If anyone has a lead on a 35” digital spare tire carrier let me know.

Oh my gosh, that last picture of the taped camera made me burst out in laughter. I'm sorry, that is not funny. It is sad.

That is crazy bad corrosion. I've seen test specimens forgotten in a corrosion test solution for many months that did not look that bad. I would encourage you to make sure the grounds are good and there are no chaffed wires for that light. I suppose that tire carrier center piece could be cast zinc or magnesium, which would be less noble than aluminum and corrode first. But if the carrier is aluminum, what ever is driving that corrosion might go after your aluminum tailgate next.

That picture confirms my original hypothesis. A hydroxide of some sort penetrated a damaged covering. Seawater is a common source.
