7MT - clutch slave cylinder failure

Haven’t seen anyone post about this failure, so hoping it’s just a freak, rare occurrence. My slave cylinder on my ‘24 Badlands 2DR failed at 4 months / 6,800 miles. I don’t drive hard or drop the clutch like a crazy man. Wondering if others have had this happen and if this is likely an isolated incident or if I should be watching for other transmission and clutch related issues once I get it back. Dealer is telling me it’s going to take about 2 weeks to get it back to me and got me a rental in the meantime.

This happened to me also. It occurred shortly after the TSB was completed. It’s working fine now.

During the TSB, mine failed. At what point, or cause, I do not know.

But it extended the service by two weeks. On the upside, you get a freshly revised CSC

Generally speaking they can and do fail- maybe a lot- for whatever reason. I had a brand new clutch and Slave installed on my 87 Chevy Squarebody truck and 6 months later the slave failed and I had to install a new one. I installed it myself and although the install was easy, bleeding it was not until I figured out how to do it.

A few months after owning mine I thought my clutch didn’t feel right. Last year I noticed a leak between the engine and transmission. They replaced the rear main seal and when they reinstalled the transmission, the clutch would not bleed and the fluid looked contaminated. The clutch master failed. They replaced all the clutch parts and flushed the brake fluid as well. Feels better than it ever did.

FWIW, slave cylinder failures are pretty common in my experience. A number of motorbikes are plagued with them [early 2000s Ducatis, for example], and I've seen them fail on 80s Dodge & Ford trucks, too. Try not to worry about it, and just keep up with fluid flushes after you get your new one.

Thanks! I am pretty meticulous with maintenance, so it will definitely get proper fluid changes at needed intervals. I actually had the master brake cylinder on my ‘75 BMW R90/6 go out and was able to rebuild that myself. The clutch slave cylinder for a ‘24 Bronco is going to be…trickier. Gonna leave that to the professionals handling my warranty repair.

Good show! I did the same on an RC51 years ago. If it'd happen to my Bronco, I'd have it done professionally, too.

Quick update — dealer texted on Friday. The new slave cylinder arrived last week and they installed it. But it was still leaking clutch fluid, so next they ordered a new hose they believe is the culprit and hope to have that in today. Getting a little worried this is going to turn into whack-a-mole to find the true source of the problem, but crossing fingers that this resolves the issue for good.

Still have a rental from Ford. It has decidedly NOT inspired me to buy a Ford Edge, but I have basic transportation while they fix this.

I drive it like I stole it and we don't have a 150-page thread about it here, so I'm going with freak occurrence.

Best of luck to you and the dealer figuring it out--good sign they admitted to you that it still leaked fluid and didn't just give it to you without checking.

Similar experience with the new Ford Egg... I mean Eggscape... err, Escape. Depressing the accelerator was a guessing game of when the signal would reach the engine.

'21... in the dealer for the same problem at 12 k miles (I have another post about it). Funny, they want to keep it and drive it for a bit to make sure it's fixed - I wonder how confident they are that the leak is from the cylinder. Glad they are double checking it.

This just happened to me Monday (7/15). I have 46,000mi on a 2021 Badlands. Dealership said they are replacing the flywheel, clutch, and slave cylinder. No word on what caused it. I'm expecting it to be covered under the powertrain warranty, but no confirmation on that. I was stopped in traffic and when I tried engaging the pedal, the pedal dropped to the floor.
