I agree people tend to imagine reasons that rationalize their decision, then prosecute those (maybe not well founded) reasons as if they were the only truth. I know for me, my Homer Simpson diet makes the narrow 4dr door a general hassle, if I had considered it at all. They aren't really even trying, though. Unless you have exactly three kids, the 2-door works in every situation the 4-door does. The 4-door does have a lot more cargo space, but our very first trip in the Bronco was a 5-day, 4-state, 3 adult, 1 pre-teen journey. Everything fit, everyone was comfortable. We all took turns in the back, and I found it perfectly fine. So we had to climb in behind the front seats--no big deal. Probably 95+ percent of the time, people are driving alone or with no more than one other person, anyway.
However, the extra doors does make life easier and there is a dearth of space in the rear. IMO everything else makes up for that, but I don't bemoan people choosing not to go through that hassle themselves. I'm really kinda too tall to get in the back (plus the donut midsection...), so if I had to get in the back seats regularly, I would be annoyed and probably gripe a lot.
Maybe the real issue is that Americans huge ass cars compared to most of the rest of the world, we are totally spoiled so most of us whine and cry when we should really just get on with it.
