MY TRANSMISSION IS TOAST! To be rebuilt or replaced under warranty:

TL/DR
2024 2.3l 10auto 4A has a mechanically failed transmission at 32k miles.

The long story for those that have similar issues or be aware your seemingly trusty trail beast can crap put on any given day.

It been sad and perplexing few days….

I have a 2024 Everglades (2.3l 10 speed auto 4A)….original owner 1/8/24 blend date and right around 32k miles.

I couldn’t help but notice the shifting was rough when accelerating, particularly through gears 2, 3, 4, maybe 5th too. And when decelerating (downshifting) there was a rough shift through these same gears. No dash warnings would light up. I did see a “check engine warning message and then the yellow engine light was on briefly.

I called the dealer that same day to make an appointment. A few days later drove to the dealer on the backroads.
I kept it parked until the appointment day.

I did read up about how I could fix this issue myself by disconnecting the battery and it would reset the electronics and everything would be fine. I wanted to bring it to the dealer to have them document the issue and fix it by a ford authorized mechanic (and also note my issue at 32k miles prior to the 36k warranty or 60k power train).

the dealer tried a “reset” and took it for a drive. They noted issue got much worse and could barely limp it back to the dealer. The transmission had failed mechanically.

The dtc codes before dealer did a “electronic reset” and same codes after:
P0772
P2704
P0734
P0766

Right now Ford is havig the dealer open up the transmission to determine what is fucked inside and will recommend a rebuild or a replacement.

I will find out from the dealer the transmission part number, serial number, build date etc. Apparently they came out with a fix for other transmission failure issues with prior and up 24 and 25 models.

I don’t wheel too much, when I do it’s gingerly crawling or forest roads, on pavement I drive conservatively, and keep up with very regular tire rotations, oil changes every 5k miles.

At this point my confidence in this machine (and all fords) has dropped to near bottom.

Are other people having transmission failures with the 10R60 on 24 models?

I am glad I bought the extended warranty to 100k miles but I am not too confident a replacement transmission will make it even close to 100k….Will I even be able to reach 100k, 120, 150 ? My expectation is I would easily hit 200k…..but my gut feeling says this is a pipe dream.

I drive to some remote places where….its a long ass way for Matt’s Off-road Recovery to show up. But dang….maybe I’ll get a free shirt out of all this.

this is really fucked Ford Motor Company! Where’s the @Ford bot when you need it?

I’m kind of ready to walk away from this mess ….but I love it so much.

Stay tuned folks! I might have a bunch of nice mods to sell off ( Baja lights, Pura vida attic shelf, kicker key, mabett plastic package, machined aluminum snorkel covers that don’t warp, )

Sorry to hear you have 10r60 problems…they are pretty good transmissions…failures are very rare in broncos…luck of the draw…

My S550 HPP had two valve bodies, 2 rebuilds and 4 software updates before a new one installed, over 2.5 years, then I bought a custom trans tune. I got Mustang loaners so was fun to test different specs plus made friends with dealer owner, and top shop folks as well as cuties working there haha.

Then they bought it from me for $7K profit after 40K miles.

10R60 failures are pretty rare.

Are you over 3 years? I'm assuming you aren't.
Not sure why they're even opening it up if it's still within 3/36, they can just use the LTIS policy and replace the whole assembly 🤷‍♂️

EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot Ford changed this to 12/12 a little while ago.

Buena Suerte...meanwhile...here's video for R1080 but yours is similar???
Most common 10R80 failures don't translate to 10R60's

my dealer service person said they are following what ford corporate is tell them to do. My service guy said ford will decide how far the damage went in the transmission and could do a rebuild. He did say they really hope it’s a replacement.

I would like to go in there more informed on the ford policies and operations. What is LTIS ?

LTIS is low time in service. It basically lets dealers simply replace the transmission without digging into it if diagnosis leads to an internal failure.

I edited my original post though, because I forgot Ford lowered the time/mileage for the policy. So yours wouldn't be covered under that.

It will most likely need to be rebuilt unless there is a part on backorder. It's hard to fail the cost cap on a 10 speed without a LOT of damage.

Nothing a little night visit with a little hammer won't fix.

"Hey George, you hear pinging next door at the dealership??"

"Go back to sleep, Verna. It's just the dog."

"You can't hear a dang thing, George. Pbfft!"

"Thank gawd. Go to sleep!"

This sounds like it’s your first Ford experience by the comment, that’s unfortunate to come up short with the bad one.

There is no trend of these failing in Broncos or the many other vehicles they are in.
Let them replace it and you should be good, you just had bad luck is all.

I am at a little over 16k miles on my 2.3 auto and I've had it stall on me once recently and have had some funky shifting going on. Hunting for gears, a little jolt going from 3rd to 2nd or 1st, 7th into 6th. It has me a little worry if mine is one of the few 2024s that will have trans issues as well since in my opinion with 16k it shouldn't be doing this weird shifting

I’ve done some deep digging about this….here is what I’ve learned:

there are things you can do do try and fit it yourself (which I believe this task should be handled by the dealer/ford as this is under warranty). Also these things should never happen at 50, 70 or 150k miles.

here are the diy tricks:
Disconnect the battery for 15mins or overnight (some even said to honk the horn after disconnect to drain all the power)….this supposedly will reset the computers and the shifting hiccups will be fixed. In a best case scenario this is resolved by a computer glitch (which also shouldn’t happen, but can).

FORSCAN: clear the dtc codes in combo with the battery trick.

The dealer will do the same thing but at least when they do it there is a record by ford of the issue and it’s documented by them and the mileage (under warranty).

In your case I woukd consider buying a granger esp. I am very happy I bought the 8 or 10 year 100k coverage plan. This will cover issues up to 100k instead of just to the included power train warranty 60k mi.
I’m pretty sure it’s hard to buy a warranty after a documented issue.

I’ve also learned the 10R60 is notably a reliable transmission. Failures of these are rare….but they do happen. There are some known manufacturing issues that a casing can slip and things don’t fit or shift properly and thus cause rough shifting. Apparently they know about this and made some changes to the newer models. There are transmission issues reported from 21 through 26s. I don’t know if it’s the same issue with all models but there are no years that have no problems.

I am sorry you are experiencing rough shifting. No car should have these issues at 16k (or ever) if it’s manufactured properly and things are functioning as designed. I would look into an extended warranty from granger and then make an appointment with your dealer. Ask about a rental/loaner car. They hooked me up with a 26 sport that had 12 miles on it. It’s different but better than taking the bus or borrowing a car from family or friends.

good luck. Take notes, do research and I hope the electric reset resolves your issues.

I do get some hard clunk down shifts in mine, especially when it's cold. Once the trans temp is up to normal, it smooths out better but not entirely. Noticing it's getting worse now too (25k miles, changed the fluid / filter at 4k for the PPE pan and had the dealership reconfirm proper fluid level). Might be heading to the dealer soon for a warranty checkup on it, first trip in.

What I have always had, is the hard clanking noise with putting it into Park or from Park into gear. Sounds more like the driveshaft torquing, but when I back it into the garage and if I don't put it into park in a gentle manner, it will slap the claw onto the transmission.
