I used a solid 4" drop hitch to tow a 6x12 uhaul around town and to the dump for moving a few years ago. I went with the 4" because I have a 2 door badlands and the posted uhaul trailer specs indicated I would need some drop. With that I had no issues with the spare clearing the hitch for transport, and the trailer was decently level.

I did careful measuring when I bought my ball mount using UHaul specifications for a 18" high ball. I bought a Curt 45050 which has a 4" drop. I have a 2023 Badlands non Sas 4 door.

The most difficult part was 250 fl-lb torque spec. to tighten the nut for the ball. I got a loaner from a local parts store. I think a UHaul store (not dealer) may be able to help.

I know this might sound like a strange question but...

Do you have a hard top or a soft top?

I have a soft top and tried to rent a U-Haul trailer a few weeks ago and they REFUSED to rent to me because of the soft top.

I was never asked about what top is on my Bronco in all of my phone conversations - this only became an issue when I showed up to pick up the trailer and they saw that it was a soft top and then refused.

Crazy I know, but they said that it is an overall corporate policy, not just a policy of that location (Nashville, TN). I asked to speak with the manager and he agreed it was stupid, but confirmed that they could not rent trailers to ANY vehicle that has a soft top. Said he believed it might be connected to some past lawsuits.

So anyone with a soft top Bronco (or any vehicle for that matter) that wants to rent a U-Haul trailer of any kind - Be Warned!

Good call out, I forgot about that. It's been the policy since at least 2007 when they wouldn't rent a trailer to my with my soft top JKUX. They said back then that the company was afraid that if you flipped on your side the trailer could swing around and injure the occupants. Not really sure that Jeep or Bronco Hardtops are going to offer much more protection in that area, but oh well.

Oh wow, that’s incredible! I have a soft top. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll check with them in person. I have about a month before the move.

I ran into that years ago, trying to rent a trailer to pull behind a Ford Explorer. Because of all the hype about explorer rollovers their policy was to not rent a trailer to pull behind one, so I would just send someone down to get the trailer and then I would swap vehicles. eyebrows raised when I returned it but so what.

That’s a smart move. Thanks

Trouble is you have to declare what the tow vehicle is going to be for insurance purposes.

U-Haul won’t rent trailers to individuals using soft tops for some reason. If you have a soft top, you might want to clear that hurdle first- if intending to use the bronco to haul with.

1200 mile round trip with one for me and zero issues. I was pushing the weight limit but bronco didn’t know it was there. Ran about 70-75 the entire time. Get a 2-3” drop hitch and you’re good to go. Mine cleared without removing the spare

I may have taken a 6x12 across the country once.

Ford Bronco Towing a U-Haul Trailer IMG_20241221_100056_028

There's a 'glide Harley in there, tools, etc. I'm not saying it was over the Bronco's tow rating, but... 😂

I had two different ball hitches; one hung a couple inches lower than the other, but that's perfectly normal I hear.

I did use a 12" extension from Harbor Freight which helped greatly.

I had the 4 or 6" drop for driving, but I put a floor jack under the tongue and switched to the 2" drop to align with the ramp to load/unload the Harley. I don't remember if it is 4 or 6" but I had an Icon Stage 4 suspension and the stock 33s on at the time so it was probably 6"

Some Uhaul places will absolutely not rent to a soft top, but... some Uhaul locations just need the money. Be careful either way.
