I was taking my gear out of the trunk and pondering the tailgate rattle. When I closed the tailgate and started looking at the spare something didn’t quite look right.

Upon closer inspection the housing for the rear view camera is swollen, burst and deformed on the left side. But the camera still works. Has anyone seen anything like this? It’s puffed like a bad LiPo battery, as far as I know there is no battery in there. So maybe a short or over heating? Not that it would ever get enough use to over heat.

Well, looks like my Bronco has the exact same problem.

Definitely gets super cold here.

When I took mine all apart to apply the spare delete set-up, I thought it was a poor design/execution on Ford's part. Thanks for confirming my assumptions... 😱 (sorry you have to deal with it...)

For the most part I walk right past it and never look. Wonder how many owners would find the same if they were to look

Yeah, everything works so I have no plans to fix it. It’s just cosmetic at this point. I tow almost every day during the summer and I use the backup camera to line up with the trailer. As long as the camera works I am fine with the cracked housing.

Have you @Montana Bronco or @JTK37 had the rear camera replacement work done for the recall? Just wondering if they could be doing something to affect that.

Now I think about it, one of the dealers told me they crack the carriers all the time doing the camera work. @Ducati1098 thought that was Bush League, but there seems to techs with issues.

I haven’t had mine replaced with. Coming up on 100k in the next month or so, planning on having all the open recalls addressed with that service.

With the corrosion the camera was so tight it wouldn’t budge, had to cut the tube so I could slide it out. Looks like it should slide right into a fresh tire carrier with no issue.

I didn’t even know there was a recall. I did get my oil changed at the dealer in Bozeman last month. No idea if they did anything with the camera.

OK, just wondering if that could be a factor since I've not seen anyone with this issue....or maybe yinz are just trail blazers! :)

Live in Alaska, so no stranger to cold, and this is wild to me.

Did any of you guys experiencing this have people other than you install, swap or otherwise handle the spare tire?

@AK SNO RIDER you seen this?

My spare has been off the car three times (prior to this finding).

Once to install the rear Diode Dynamics light a few years ago, twice at the detailer for ceramic coating and detail(both in the past two years)

What the hell is it filled with? mine was an empty hollow tube. Mine is a 23..... water (ice) expansion would explain the cracking but there is no way that would hold water to expand. AND as Ducati mentioned there are obvious marks on the very end that strongly suggest it has been struck by something. That "fill" almost looks like fractured portland cement.
Bronco was feeling inadequate about their camera housing. Got this person on the scene:
Fake doctor injected patients with tire sealant and cement to give them BBLs, leaving one dead
