I remember the days of installing turbo timers in my DSM's and MR2's. Technology has certainly improved over the decades when you consider how many mass commuter vehicles today have turbochargers and the average driver doesn't know a thing about them, it's kind of surprising that vehicles today are as reliable as they are.

"planned obsolescence' Show me where this is official policy? Sure they want to sell vehicles, but nobody is going to buy them if they last only 100K miles. If "planned obsolescence" sells cars, Toyota should have been bankrupt decades ago. If I didn't trust my Bronco go 300K miles with good care I would sell it tomorrow.
So this isnt proof or anything but a decent story…

I had an instructor back in military training who spent a couple of years as a QC Engineer at GM. He loved to tell the story about how one of his projects was the turn signal stalk:

Apparently they were not failing often enough, so his job was to figure out how to bring the production price down even further, all the way to the point where the MTBF (or some factor based thereon) was 50% longer than the standard warranty coverage

He quit and joined the service once he realized his job as QC was to lower the quality for financials, not to improve it for consumer use

Thanks @JediMcMuffin, This definitely was additional and reinforced info, and is making me more aware of my maintenance and care.

Pretty stupid looking thumbnail. That's enough to prevent me from watching such a "clickbait looking" video. Nobody's turbo looks like that on a road car.
Nah, blow-by and FOD can look exactly like that.
I've been running, racing, and dealing with turbos since around 1990 and have seen them that looked like that.

Especially if it also has Gin, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, hot sauce, celery salt, black pepper and garnished with a strip of crispy bacon.
Best reply I’ve seen since joining.

Cheapest and best way easy is don't be cheap with regular gas. Run premium gas.

This right here is the answer. I have worked for American OEMs, Tier 1, and Tier 2 suppliers. They'll never publish that they plan for things to break at a certain point, but it is absolutely true, in a round-about way.

See, they force themselves to meet 100k testing for as many components as possible. That is the point at which the financial guys start looking for ways to cut costs - 'what can we do to save money without sacrificing 100k?' Might be small design changes to save on material, processing changes, material changes, etc. And as noted, if it lasts 'too long' then they want to do whatever they can to get it closer to 100k.

Now, that is for American OEMs. Toyota and most of your other Eastern OEMs, they don't follow that guideline - they WANT their stuff to last as long as it can, because their culture isn't as much about 'How much money can we make?' but rather 'How can we make our products better for the consumer, that will keep bringing them back and taking money away from our competitors?' Sure, their growth doesn't show as explosive gains, but it is steady and continuous.
