Pay it, not worth potential problems down the line for $100. Nothing worse than waiting at a DMV and then having them tell you you have an unpaid fine and they can't help you. Also if it goes to collection it could lower your credit score.

I’m also thinking their sheriff could forward the notice of summons to my sheriff and the next time I need my carry permit renewed…surprise!

Only speeders get tax relief, sounds like a great plan. Getting a citation by cam is only allowed in some states. Honestly after getting hit by a red light runner, I changed my opinion of the practice.
I’m fully in favor of the red light cams. It’s a big problem these days where I live. If you launch at green without looking both ways first, you’re really gambling.

I just paid online. They had multiple photos plus a video. Didn’t have the cool retro look on the website pics.

The video shows I was following traffic so the Sheriff probably sent a lot of these out that day.

At least I’ll have a new profile pic available when I want to update…

Brilliant... just plain Brilliant!!!
Right? I’ll just rerun the speed trap if I do any mods like taking my running boards off. Gotta keep the pic current.

In the "Civil Offense" category, back a few years ago Arizona had this person taking the toll roads and never getting a toll tag. After a few years of not getting this person to pay the fines, which were in the tens of thousands I think by then, they took them to court.

Well, what it came out to was the guy was an airline steward and was mostly taking the toll roads back and forth to the airport. It was clearly his car, his plates, they knew who he was... except. He always wore a mask where his face was obscured. I want to say they were animal masks based on characters from the Lion King. The photo that got posted was a giraffe, at least.

He ended up winning because they couldn't prove it was him driving the car.

And yeah, to those folks who think these traffic cameras are the bees knees, they're so corrupt. There's a reason why they've been removed from many jurisdictions and states. Best way to get money (mostly for the private company)? Shorten the length of yellow lights to like .72s so people inadvertently run red lights. If you've ever been in a town somewhere where there were a lot of short yellow lights, did they have cameras? Yeah, real legit use of technology there. Not to mention all the payoffs and corruption involved in the contracting. We got rid of them in Texas and good riddance.

I also am in favor of getting DoEs (Drivers of Entitlement) to stop speeding and running lights and stop signs.....but,

this feeling is tempered by:
living in San Diego years ago, the local govt (city or county? can't remember) and the contractor for the red light cameras, who got a kickback on each ticket issued, were caught
SHORTENING THE TIME DURATION OF THE YELLOW SIGNAL
at each camera location!
I think there were fines and halting of the cameras...for a while at least.

It seems like many of the yellow lights around here are very short -- almost a panic brake situation to stop before ending 1/2 way into the intersection -- and I am suspicious of this.

A good radar detector would have alerted you to the photo camera.
Waze does too, at least when I was on vacation in Colorado I heard it tell me once

I remember years ago reading about a small town judge and police officer that were caught in a red light scam. The light was hooked to a manual switch and could be flipped straight to red with no yellow. The cop was in waiting to write it up. The judge would quash any complaints about it in court.

I think they eventually ticketed an FBI agent which lead to an investigation and charges.

There were actually jurisdictions that had to change local laws to meet the demands of the companies offering the red light systems since some of them were not legally allowed to make the yellow lights so short. It's actually a years-long effort to make money with these systems (they can cost upwards $100k per light setup), which drives the corruption to push up the number of tickets as quickly as possible. They're a blueprint for bad behavior.
