You will get one more qt out if left overnight to drain. My dipstick doesn't lie & I always check oil level after car sits overnight, parked on a level surface. A shop will do 6qts and that is fine since they don't let the last quart drain. When I do an oil change, I prefer to change ALL the oil. Enough said, I'm done here.

Honest question.... where is this "extra" quart hiding, that it takes so long to drain? 🤔

Shit, you've convinced me. I'm gonna put 8 quarts in and let it drain for two days. I figure I should get 9 quarts out by then.

The only time I'll disagree with Ducati.

7. Seven. Siete. VII. Many many changes, and yes, dead on the stick with 7.

To each their own. I have no problem with what others do with their own Bronco.
That being said, the correct specification is still 6 lol

Severe Oil Consumption Concern on 2022 Bronco
Hey everyone,
I bought a 2022 Bronco with 41k miles this past August. Right after purchase, I changed the oil and filter using Valvoline 5W-30 Restore & Protect. (Prior service history showed that the oil was changed between 10k and 12k miles). Today, at about 3,500 miles since that change, I decided to swap the oil again—and got a surprise.
Here’s what happened:
  • Checked the dipstick before draining: completely dry.
  • Added 1 quart—barely registered. Added another quart, then warmed up the engine before draining.
  • Changed oil and filter with 6 quarts of Valvoline Restore & Protect. The old oil was pretty dark.
  • Inspected the filter—no metal flakes.
For reference, I also own a 2007 Lexus GX470 and a 2014 Dodge Durango 5.7 (both over 130k miles) and neither has ever burned oil. I’ve always done 5k-mile oil changes, so this was shocking.
Observations:
  • No smoke from the exhaust.
  • Inside of tailpipe was black; soot stuck to my finger and didn’t wipe off easily—maybe some oil burning during combustion?
  • Research shows these turbo engines can consume 1 qt every 500–1,000 miles, but this seems excessive.
  • My daughter drives it 3 miles to school daily—maybe not enough time for the engine to reach full temp and burn off condensation/fuel?
Questions for the group:
  1. Do Broncos have a low-oil warning light that should have come on?
  2. Should I be worried about long-term engine issues?
  3. Rememberd to pull an oil sample for Blackstone after I drained the oil. Duhhh!!!
Thoughts??? Thanks, Sherlock
Same vehicle but only 22k miles. I use Mobil 1 5w-30, no oil usage between changes at 5k intervals. I will say however that getting an accurate oil reading from the dipstick is almost impossible on the 2.7 Bronco. About once every two weeks, I'll pop the hood, pull the dipstick out then close the hood for a few hours to allow all the oil to drain into the crankcase and off the interior of the dip stick tube. After 3-4 hours I'll put the clean stick in and retract to get the oil level. So far, no more than a half-quart usage during that 5k oil change interval.

I let my oil drain for 20 hours overnight last time. I even jacked up the driver side and used a MityVac to suck the pooled up residue from the bottom of the pan.

Then Measured 6 Quarts into a graduated funnel during my last change in case you don’t trust the Mobil Juggalos to measure properly.

Primed the system then drove for 20 miles.
Let it sit overnight for 14 hours then checked level:

IIRC, dot to dot is 1/2 quart. I could see an argument for maybe another 1/4 quart here….maybe. But 6 QTs put it right in the zone. If you don’t do all the silly stuff I did overnight with jacks and vacuums 6 qt is probably right on the money.

Yeah anywhere between the dots is consider full. For me, 6 puts it right in the middle which is perfect. I guess if you really wanted to get all the way to the top, then 6.5/7 would work.

Isn't going to make a single difference either way. The way I see it, the 7th quart is just a waste of money.

I agree, 7 would put me over max level (top dot) by at least 1/2 qt. As I understand it overfilling can have adverse implications for the PCV system. 1/2 qt over is probably not going to matter like you say, but overtime overfilling can send more oil through the PCV valve, leading to deposits and actuation problems. Then there is the extra drag and some impaired oil dispersion inside the crankcase if the level is significantly high.
