Severe Oil Consumption Concern on 2022 Bronco
Hey everyone,
I bought a 2022 Bronco with 41k miles this past August. Right after purchase, I changed the oil and filter using Valvoline 5W-30 Restore & Protect. (Prior service history showed that the oil was changed between 10k and 12k miles). Today, at about 3,500 miles since that change, I decided to swap the oil again—and got a surprise.
Here’s what happened:
  • Checked the dipstick before draining: completely dry.
  • Added 1 quart—barely registered. Added another quart, then warmed up the engine before draining.
  • Changed oil and filter with 6 quarts of Valvoline Restore & Protect. The old oil was pretty dark.
  • Inspected the filter—no metal flakes.
For reference, I also own a 2007 Lexus GX470 and a 2014 Dodge Durango 5.7 (both over 130k miles) and neither has ever burned oil. I’ve always done 5k-mile oil changes, so this was shocking.
Observations:
  • No smoke from the exhaust.
  • Inside of tailpipe was black; soot stuck to my finger and didn’t wipe off easily—maybe some oil burning during combustion?
  • Research shows these turbo engines can consume 1 qt every 500–1,000 miles, but this seems excessive.
  • My daughter drives it 3 miles to school daily—maybe not enough time for the engine to reach full temp and burn off condensation/fuel?
Questions for the group:
  1. Do Broncos have a low-oil warning light that should have come on?
  2. Should I be worried about long-term engine issues?
  3. Rememberd to pull an oil sample for Blackstone after I drained the oil. Duhhh!!!
Thoughts??? Thanks, Sherlock

Sounds normal for the exhaust. No oil residue on the skid plate or around the oil filter, or anywhere in the engine bay?

1. They have an oil pressure warning light. Not exactly the same, but obviously depending on how low the oil level actually is, I’d expect that light to illuminate.

2. Yes, if it’s actually consuming that much oil.

You’re still within powertrain warranty. Bring it to your dealership and have them perform an oil consumption test.

Engine bay was clean. Most all of my concerns would be addressed if I had taken an oil sample. Hindsight...

I don't think you can draw any conclusions just yet..... I would keep driving it, and check the oil level daily, to get a better idea what's going on. Could just be "normal" consumption.

If there’s no oil anywhere I’d suspect underfilling but yeah keep an eye on the level. Burning oil will usually pop some codes and smoke if it’s that bad

Owners cause oil consumption by either not breaking a vehicle in gently or running it hard before it’s up to full operating temperature, or not maintaining it early or often enough. Oil changes are practically free insurance against engine damage and oil consumption. I’ve driven Fords for almost 3,000,000 miles and have never had a problem with any of them using my conservative method.

A Ford Bronco with the 2.7L engine requires 6 quarts of oil for a standard oil change, including the filter. While some early models or manuals may have mistakenly listed 7 quarts, the official recommendation is now 6 quarts, so adding this amount and checking the dipstick is the correct procedure.

Incorrect, dipstick is dead on after filling with 7qts after a proper (overnight) draining & I know I have the correct dipstick. Did thorough research before my 1st oil change and I am beyond obsessed with this stuff. It is 7qts

Thank you. That is what I have been following.
