I’m so glad I didn’t fall to the hype. Still rocking my Hoss 2.0 in my Badlands.
I saw George from Trail Militia beats the hell out of his Bronco and didn’t have problems either with Hoss 2.0 rack.
You could buy 6 or 7 hoss 3.0 racks for what I have into my 74 weld "unbreakable" rack that I've broken twice. By far the biggest waste of money.

Breaking a steering rack can’t be fun. I wouldn’t want to do a rack swap on the trail. Or even carry a spare rack just in case. A hoss 3.0 rack is a good value for larger tires. Not terribly expensive.

A suspension lift with increased CV angles also comes with increased tie rod angles, so increased lateral loads on the rack especially near the ends. Increasing support on drivers and passenger side rack ends also makes good sense.

I’ve swapped a couple out on the trail. But now wifey can do it so it shouldn’t be too terrible. I’ll watch the dogs while the ladies enthusiastically swap it out. Easy work.

unfortunately for me. I probably fall in the ladies category then.

then again it can’t be all that difficult with those portals. Maybe I can even stand underneath while working.

These two found it to be quite roomy while performing torque checks 😂

I might have the same issue. I thought it might be loose steering rack mounting bolts, but I tightened those down and still have it. This was a pain in the ass as I had to remove my hidden winch to get to them.

I was also thinking skid plates that have some dirt between them rubbing together, but I haven’t gotten around to check that.

The only time I notice it is when I back out of my parking spot and turn the wheel to the left. It’s not as deep of a clunk sound as in the video, it’s more of a “clink” sound. As I straighten out it clinks some more, but as I get up to speed the sound goes away and I don’t really notice it on the street. Could this be the same thing?
If a loose fastener was to blame, it could be the input shaft clevis bolt, make sure thats tight. but I doubt it explains the issue, at least fully

He said (we’re talking suspension so I asked him real quick since I had him on the line) he’ll make them by request but isn’t advertising them on the website any more. So if it’s something you’re serious about shoot him an email
Yeah, this is how I got my Billet passenger side housing, he was actually out on the trail on a Saturday and I was trying to order had his wife add it to the site so I could purchase it. Super cool guy.

Yeah, he joined and was posting here and we weren't very nice to him. I don't think all that has aged very well...

We never had a problem with ours either. But, when planning out the mods, I was trying to strengthen appropriately for what we were doing. Thought the steering rack would fall in that category of things that need beefed up. Can’t do anything about it now beyond being honest in the experience to prevent others from making the same mistake.

More mistakes to follow, have no fear.
I did my mods because of the lack of support at the worm shaft, and the passenger side is just suspended in thin air. My experience is the bushing and billet passenger housing is good insurance if doing tougher trails. Still binds like all of them if crossed up with lockers, but seems a little better than stock to me???

Yeah, the passenger housing i got from him is pretty stout and a nice piece. The pics of his long travel in action speak for themselves, definitely has some travel. Plus like I said his customer service is pretty good....

Definitely hasn’t aged well if you’re a 74 rack owner 😂

Indeed. A positive attribute of this forum is to be skeptical but with the purpose of increasing knowledge and improving products we all care about. A lofty goal that requires a thick skin from the product developers.

I did my mods because of the lack of support at the worm shaft, and the passenger side is just suspended in thin air. this is the one of the fundamental requirements. The steering rack is displacement dominated. Perfectly constrained displacements by the housing is step one to improved performance. Of course stresses need to be limited to avoid housing failure but displacement control is the objective

Having some OEM steering experience I understood from the start that this rack would have some amount of lash on center. Doesnt matter how nice 74Welds machines are, if you take the pinion/rack spring loaded yoke bearing out, you will have lash. If you didnt, the rack tolerance would be so tight that the steering effort would be ruined.
So even with perfect displacement control the rack/pinion must function within reasonable steering effort and lash control. This is completely incumbent on the internals.

People hear billet housing and get all googoo eyed. Primary objective is to control displacements. So question are; is a full housing required to control displacements? Can displacements be reasonably controlled by rack end conditions (just drivers and passengers band aids which may actually be good enough for many)? What is the increasing rate of return on a full housing solution versus just end condition band aids? Those that can answer the last question should be well positioned to provide real solutions customers need.

I have engineered my solution according to first principles with the goal of creating a long-lasting, easy to service, and virtually indestructible steering rack solution.
So curious where you are getting your geometry data from for the rack housing? Once you have the geometry data are you then running fully first principle (conservation of mass, momentum, and energy) finite element simulations? If so it would be awesome to quantify the increased rate of return from a full housing vs bandaid end conditions on displacements wrt given loading conditions. It is entirely possible that good displacement control at the end conditions, although perceived as a bandaid, may be good enough for many. Perhaps a 75% improvement over oem rack wrt full housing. And much more cost effective. 🤷‍♂️
