How else can you check Email/Facebook/Instagram/your eBay bid status/etc. at the light while the rest of us pay attention to what we're supposed to be doing - Operating a 5000 pound complex mechanical nightmare in traffic with others using their freaking phones.

Because the phone is to damn big to fit comfortably in your back pocket when driving period, not to use while driving not to view anything
I have never carried a phone in my back pocket - front pocket is preferable because if someone's going to try to pickpocket me they'd better be willing to cop a feel. And because I don't wear skinny jeans I can sit down just fine with a phone in my front pocket.

I've been curious about this. I am about to get my bronco tomorrow, so asking with zero experience with this rig right now.

Why are folks getting phone mounts for their vehicle?

Seems like for street driving, Google play/apple play is fine

For off roading, I can see using camera views and a having a phone mount with onx, gaia, or whatever your favorite navigation app is.

I get mounting cameras, radio holders, etc. just the phone mount seemed niche, yet I see ads and picture of dash boards with them constantly.

Am I missing something? Is there another use case besides what I mentioned where the onboard system doesn't cut it?
For following maps off road like OnX-offroad or similar when on the trail, to get it closer to eye level.

My reasons are a) my phone mounts also charge both my phone and my wife's phone (for long trips using Waze, while listening to music, ... phone stays charged), b) while I have Android Auto and it works well, it's easier for me to access some apps on my phone (at stops, while sitting in car waiting for something), c) while my phone is connected via Android Auto, my wife's phone isn't so she can still access/use her phone as needed.

Well isn’t that special, I can carry one in my front pocket because of the 45 pistol in my waist band

2024 BB SAS with no major extras...

To keep my phone plugged in and charging I had a cable from the under dash ports and just plugged in my phone and either threw it on the passenger seat or put it in one of the drink holder cubbies.

I've since Put a 3-port USB module in place of the mount in the center upper dash (still issues with that but do get power up there so no need for a long cable from way down below).

As my phone has a Quad Lock Mag-Lock case (mainly for my motorcylce) I have their charging head mounted on a RAM mount that brings the phone towards me (or at least facing my direction)

Do I use my phone there... Not really... Let's say currently less than 1%... But it is not on the seat or in one of the drink holders when I try to put my water bottle in...

But I was stuck in traffic once and saw something up ahead so put the camera in video record... Nothing exciting but it was a decent image of what I was driving past
- I now have a Wolfbox so will have that
- but having the option to record with the phone up there is nice
- An while I will probably not do it could be recording myself driving in whatever I am driving in might be of use... (would probably be just a video of me b!tchin about other drivers TBH...)

I have my phone on a mount and run and control apples music app from it. I use the big screen for maps. I don’t stream so all my music is on my phone and navigating 900 gigs of mp3s is not a good experience using CarPlay.

That's where I place mine if Apple Maps has problems connecting. Good place to keep sunglasses if your phone isn't taking the space.

Ok, they changed the center console, I don't have that slot. My goat wheel is in back, mine looks like this (below).

There is a great spot for the phone on the left in front of the shift knob, but not enough room for it to be plugged in. That is where I thought to put the charging puck.

That slot looks handy, as does the goat position

That slot is only on the manual transmission trucks. That's Ford's way of sticking it to you for not buying the 7MT!!! 🤣🤣🤣

The letterbox windscreen does not leave a good view for a phone. I have bought a few, but keep it below the dash and it hangs off the vent and keeps the phone cool(why are Bronco vents so twisty?). Anything above the dash really gets in the way. I do have the sliding rack from ebay for a action camera, but the phone mount is really too short and in the way of the steering wheel. Added in the image just to show.

The black at the top is the mirror, there is not much space between the dash and mirror. I did not renew my Ford nav subscription so I mostly use my phone for now, but don't want it blocking my view driving.

With Apple Carplay there is almost no reason for me to have to look at my phone while driving, and you shouldn't be doing that anyway. Absolutely love my Course phone mount that securely holds and charges my iPhone out of the way, and looks like factory equipment for the Bronco.

So not really for viewing, just for convenience?

Most of the mounts I am seeing dont have chargers. I was going to get a qi puck and put it on the dash in the phone fitted holder.
That’s what I did. I put it in the cubbyhole where the wireless OEM charger goes, and it acts as a magnetic phone mount and charger.

CarPlay works so well that I don’t have a need to pick up my phone but if I do, it’s right there. Easy access.
