Manufacturers have taken longevity into account using crankshaft position sensors to optimize starting and synthetic oils certainly help. Still the reality is that engine starting is where the greatest amount of wear takes place versus idling or driving.My guess is, he is referring to the wear that occurs at start up due to zero oil pressure for the first few moments.
Seriously, not to be a wise-ass, is there info showing how they address the drop in oil pressure for all these start stops?
Is the info regarding the majority of engine wear occuring at start-up out dated?

Nobody can convince me that an engine that's had 500,000 stop-start cycles will have the same wear on it than one that's only had 50,000 cycles but it's hard to quantify if it's worth overly worrying about especially in an era where people seem to move to new vehicles every 3-5 years.“A normal car without automatic stop-start can be expected to go through up to 50,000 stop-start events during its lifetime,” says Gerhard Arnold, who is responsible for bearing design at automotive component manufacturer Federal Mogul.
“But with automatic stop-start being activated every time the car comes to a standstill, the figure rises dramatically, perhaps to as many as 500,000 stop-start cycles over the engine’s life.”
Personally I disable it on all my vehicles but that's more of a matter that I don't like that there can at times be delays when you need to make a left turn and in heavy traffic sometimes you have to cut it close to make a turn before the light turns red. Also I personally always want my engine on when I'm in traffic because I want 100% control all the time.
