Totaled Broncos

I've seen quite a few posts of totaled Broncos and Bronco fires. I know nothing about other vehicles but are our vehicles running with a higher rate of totaling than other vehicles or is this just the average automotive industry rate of incident?

I’ve done my research on this. Broncos are prone to catch fire or be totaled 60% of the time, every time. It’s fact.

My question had no specific purpose other than just to learn for my own interest.

My question wasn't about on road safety or the fact that we sometimes do damage because we tend to do things far beyond how most other vehicles are used.

I don't spend time on any non-bronco car sites so was wondering if the rate of totaled vehicles (not just they typical car accidents of any car) is about the same rate as other cars while involved in on-road accidents. The rate seemed high based on what I am seeing from this site but I had no source of comparison.

Lets start with what does it mean to be "totaled"..... It has no bearing on how much damage was done. Hell it could have a scratch on the fender and be "totaled"....

All that means is that it was going to cost more to repair it than what it could be sold for pre-collision.

So... Early on it was difficult to get a Bronco. People had to wait literally years to get their hands on one. Repair parts were next to impossible to source. For the first several years 21, 22, 23.... It was not just expensive to get repair parts it was downright impossible. Easier for an insurance company to declare it "totaled" and give you what they claimed it would have sold for....

This means the average "totaled" would be significantly higher than other vehicles where the repair/replacement parts were readily available... Answer this question three years from now.... It is now significantly easier (supply and demand) to acquire a Bronco now and parts are becoming available. I think you will see far fewer "totaled"....

Totaled just means not economically reparable. The rate of course would be partially driven by a lack of collision parts in the supply chain - the rate was probably much higher after the Bronco was introduced, and has eased up a bit four years later. A better stat would just be overall accident rate.

You only see or read about it because it has a very active and passionate group of owners. Lots of online groups. I haven't noticed any 90’s Econoline forums or FB groups.

It's caused by Bronco owners waxing their hardtops and driving too much in 4A. The tcase clutch packs overheat, igniting the wax and paper core. Science.

Thanks. What I got out of this is yes I was hearing about a lot more totaled Broncos but that the reason was related to supply chain issues rather than issues relating to the vehicles themselves.
