Tagging another Bronco

Wow! Who would have thought that a little rubber duck would create over 17 pages of pent-up anger and resentment?

Listen, I don't like people touching my stuff just like the next person, but to read some of the comments, you would think that placing a token of goodwill and admiration is the same as someone dragging a screwdriver along the side of your vehicle.

In my retirement job I work for an automotive performance company. A few weeks ago, I took one of our Corvettes to a car show. The car was parked, and I was standing next to it having a conversation with someone I knew.

All of a sudden, this older gentleman, I estimate probably late 70s or so, walks up, opens the driver door, leans in and picks up a food ticket on the seat that was given to me. I call out, "can I help you?!". Completely ignores me and proceeds to sit in the driver seat and then picks up my sunglasses that were laying on the console. I then walk up to him again and ask him what he was doing. I was in utter disbelief at the gall this guy had.

In a much-elevated voice, I ask him again if there was something I could help him with and that he just can't be opening cars and sitting in them. He then gruffly asked me a question about the car and then walked away. This was not some entitled, ill-mannered kid, but instead an entitled old guy who figured he could do whatever he wanted.

Now that's something that upsets me.

I'm not into the rubber duck thing, but it's not going to piss me off if someone puts one on my car. I will likely throw it out. You go to car shows and people are always putting flyers on your windshield or laying them on the seat if your window is open. Heck, the police can put a parking ticket on your windshield. What are you gonna do? Start a fight every time?

Listen, I am obsessive about my cars and am meticulous about caring for them and their appearance. That said, I'm not condoning people leaving stuff on my car (within some sort of reason) but there seems to be a lot of an old man "get off my lawn" sentiment out there.

Life is short. I've dealt with disease and loss within my family, but I try to keep things in perspective on these types of things. As for the "ducking" thing, I personally look at it as someone complimenting you on your ride. It may not be something I would do, but it's well intentioned, and as long as they aren't harming the vehicle, I take it as a sign of goodwill.

This world has too much ill will and polarization to get real bent out of shape over this.

That's my opinion at least that I figured I would throw into this 17-page thread along with everyone else.

To be honest... I park way out in the middle of no where, and typically (not always) people stay the hell away. I don't think Jeeps in particular like parking next to me LOL...

Oh I got stories. Both my 2010 Chevy and my 2023 Bronco got dents in the doors with paint left within a month of owning both, and both times I was at the BACK of the parking lot by myself when I parked, no cars nearby. I mean c'mon! My Chevy was the fourth car in the Kroger parking lot at 7:15am on a Saturday morning! Why did the 450lbs dude in the conversion van park that close to me when he had the WHOLE PARKING LOT and I was at the back of the row??

By I digress. I guess the rub is it feels so personal, but it probably wasn't. Not everyone's a churlish asshole, but sometimes I fit that profile I know.

I like your take... I do think this over reaction (on both sides) is a symptom of much larger issues within our society. To me it is people telling others what to think and demeaning them if they do not conform to their notion of what things should be.... I am just trying to figure all this out and that is the best I have come up with so far....

Something I learned a long time ago that has helped me to better understand the world is this: If you have a thought, any thought, always keep the space open in your mind that the exact opposite of your thought may actually be what is true.

It's nothing more than the simple concept of flexible thinking. Once you're able to do that, then you're able to see life through an entirely new lens and you realize that most of the time there is room to learn something new from just about anyone you meet each day.

I actually saw a quick video on IG the other day of KRS-1 talking to a kid about how important it is for young people to be respectful of older people and to learn what they have to say because they have experience. Equally important is for old people to actively listen to younger people because they're coming from an entirely different place and bringing new perspective and information. I think that generally the problem with humanity is the fact that for some reason we all tend to become fixed in our thoughts and opinions of things, and we tend to ignore the fact that things change, new information exists and that others might simply have a different perspective. Nobody has life completely figured out. It's not even possible anyway. We don't know the answers or the ending of our day, week, month, year or even life so why do we constantly think we're right and then have emotions about the stories we make up to support our idea of being right. Life is nothing more than the Chinese Farmer Story.

Alright, it's time for me to come clean. Most of my rants, while truthful at the core, were riddled with statements for comic relief value. These types of threads are always the best for their entertainment and not much else. I really do think it's nonsense, but I wasn't raised by wolves.

When and if I am faced with the dilema of ducking, I will of course read the room:

* If an adult woman hands it to me, I will do my best to muster up a smile and appear grateful.
> If she's attractive and of appropriate age to mine, has no wedding ring, no small kids and gives me a how you do'in look - I will happily accept the duck, love him and squeeze him and call him George.
> Otherwise - Punishment to duck pending.

* If an adult man hands it to me, I will pinch myself to wake up from the nightmare.

* If a child hands it to me, I will grin ear-to-ear and thank them buddy so much!
> Duck gets placed on my dash while their little glowing face can see it.
> Punishment to duck pending.

* If I come out and find a surprise duck was left behind, I'll appear glad for anyone that might be watching - Punishment to duck is swift.

What is the punishment to duck? Well, I call on @HotdogThud to share a pic of what happens to ducks that get caught up in a certain accessory on the Bronco. It sends a clear message to the other ducks, and may deter future ducking.

Just because people do it does not make it right.

I agree that it is going to happen and people against the "touching" are going to have to come to grips with it....

I still see it as a social faux pas. That is the way I was raised and I am not changing my opinion on that.

I get upset when people tell me they "know better" and I should change my views because the way they see the world is superior to mine. That is where I start telling someone to step off.... It is not someone else's place to tell me how to see the world. I struggle not telling others how to see the world and I do not mind a conversation about differences in perception, BUT that conversation HAS to include respect in both directions.... Telling me I am a fool for what I believe is not respect.

I hope it comes across in my posts, but I am not in any way saying you are wrong or telling you what to believe. I certainly don't know what's better for you or anyone else for that matter.

You see a lot more Jeeps on the trail than Broncos -- just saying. Bronco owners are better off leaving their Bronco in the garage with a cover on it. God forbid bring it to a car show, someone might "touch" it.

Sure. And the Bronco was out of production how long while the Wrangler has been built non stop. Barely 5 years back and outselling Jeep last time I looked. It converted me. I’ve owned 4 Jeeps. So suuuuuuure. You see a lot of Jeeps on the trail. The presence of Broncos is clearly on the rise though.

as to the rest… argue on. Touch it. Don’t touch it. The real impressive part of this thread are the number people who would show up outside naked and armed. No time to spare for underwear? Lmao

You and me both! meaning I too am sincerely hoping that you can forgive anything I might have said that came across as demeaning or ill mannered since that was not my intension.

If someone actually hands me a trinket, I smile and accept it.
It was a personal interaction and not a drive by dropping.
I have said many times, it isn't the object, it is the placing of it on the vehicle.
I have a stuffed frog on my dash that has been on every one of my vehicles, and many rentals, since 1996.
Our Challenger has a yellow Fat Electrician Quack Bang duck on the dash.
I think I have a horse duck or 2 in the console that have been handed to me .
Again, it isn't the objects... It is the entitled, unsolicited, and unapproved touching of my property.
