Try Flac or streaming 320 kbs and see if still flat. Lack of powerful sub is easily solved.

I do have my music on a USB drive with FLAC files.

Now just waiting to see if the site I ordered the speakers from will get them in stock soon. Last week they told me 'by the end of the week'. So might give them another two weeks since the price was really good.

They also carry Audiofrog 4" GS42, but those are $100 more per pair. So don't think I want to spend the money on those. They also have Hertz Cento CX100 which are the same price as the Audison.

Hertz MP and above the way to go besides Audison AP and APX. I do have new cento C165F not using were purchased for rear fill.

Some of the higher end Audiofrogs have had issues fitting in the dash - need to do some trimming to get them to squeeze in.

My Morel 4" just ~barely~ fit and I had to use a lot of shimming and such to make them work with the stock mounts. I eventually changed to some 3D printed speaker mounts for them.

Is it smarter to go the component speaker direction or will an audison, hertz or focal 4” give me more clarity than my amplified Kicker KS 4”? Im not too familiar with the more high end speakers. I’m cheap but I know there is a lot of value doing it right the first time. The Kicker KS do well I suppose. I had infinity reference in the dash prior. Good clarity.

TLDR: You get what you pay for, for the most part.

It's more of a question of budget and what you will be satisfied with. Component, in general, is going to usually sound better. Though budget and choice of component will determine that. Once you start going with component, you have lower and higher end. So yes, if you spend $500 on component vs. $100 on coax, then the component are definitely going to sound better. If you spend $150 on component and $100 on coax, they will likely sound close. This also assumes you have enough power, enough channels, and likely adding a DSP.

For perspective, I have Kicker 47KSC504 (5.25" that are a few years old) in one of my Jeeps. It's a Jeep I'm giving to my kids. It has a hard top, but I'm not going add an amp. So IMO, it's 'good enough'. IMO, Kicker is more mid grade. Audison, Focal, and Hertz are higher grade, but again depends on what you're spending and how they are mounted. The speakers that will fit are not likely going to really be high end. High end assumes you aren't limiting yourself to the factory locations. No shallow mount subs, etc.

My trail Jeep that's a keeper has a small Alpine 4 channel 50X4 amp. I have JL 5.25" coax up front and Alpine 6.5" coax roll bar mounted pods (custom cage, so had to remove the OEM pods). I also have a powered Pioneer 10" sub. All pretty basic, lower end stuff. So it sounds decent for what it is. But it's a soft top and not a DD, so didn't want to put too much money into it. It still sound significantly better than the Bronco OEM system for not too much money invested.

I'm planning to have the Bronco for a long time and it's a DD. So not trying to go super high end, but definitely want an amp. For me, the Audison 4" coax front and rear will be 'good enough' paired with my single JL 12" and a decent amp. Still undecided about replacing the kick panel 6.5".

To change that to component, you now have a new problem. Where is everything going to go? If you put a component mid in the factory locations, you now will need component tweeters somewhere. So custom A pillar mount, or flush mount in the dash. Assuming you don't go with entry level component (or even if you do) that will get more expensive.

I used to have all components, but that was late 80's and early 90's when I was more of an audiophile (and had better hearing lol). The two vehicles I did back then sounded awesome though.

I received the Audison speakers yesterday and installed them this morning. Defintely a huge improvement. The OEM full range speakers look and feel cheap, no tweeter.

I did buy the Forscan USB to OBD adapter. I'll take a look at doing that. Not sure it will make that much of a difference on the base audio system.

I got the amp and sub installed yesterday.

I went with:

Amp: Audison SR6.6600
Audio Control LC7i-pro
Hertz 6.75" DCX 170.3 in the kick panels
JL 12” 12TW1 (sealed, downfiring box from my previous DD)
Audison Prima 4" Coaxial - front and rear pods

It sounds really good, better than my expectations, better than my previous DD with similar budget. I figure this is going to be 'one and done'.

Total cost:

Audsion amp, audiocontrol LC7, Hertz 6.75": installed by a local shop and connected existing sub: $1550

2 pairs of Audison 4" coax:
$500 - $200 credit card promo = $300

Total cost: $1850
*Does not include sub cost

My goal was to not get the Lux package and use some of that savings to have it sound MUCH better.

I have the Wolfbox G900 Tri Pro Dash Cam with rear view mirror cam so I don't have worry about anything blocking my view. I can remove the enclosure on the shelf easily (quick disconnect anderson plug) if I want and still have the 10" in a 3d printed enclosure.... in the factory location. I do the work. Took a while for me to figure out tuning and speaker choice.
