I’ve had this FabFours spare tire delete sitting around in the garage for a while… while we sort out our tailgate issue, we threw it on for cosmetic purposes for Broncopalooza this weekend (July 20th at Hamblock Ford Belvidere, IL)… can’t be looking raggedy in front of 200 other Broncos!

I actually really like the look, but don’t know how I feel about not having the spare…

I like the look of the spare but you might be okay carrying a tire repair kit and an inflator.

I have a repair kit, and think that’d be fine for getting off a trail. I don’t know how I’d feel about it on a long distance trip. But, I’ll admit… I’m not super well versed on the durability of a repaired tire either

I went pretty cheap with the DV8 unit. I don’t care for rear mounted spares and I have hit this one while on the trail so off it went. I stick the spare in the rear if I feel I need it. I’ve been doing that with my Jeep for many years.

looks good!

I wonder if I can slide my spare in the back also, and stand it up and strap it to the side 🤔

Why hang more stuff on tailgate? Just take all that stuff off. Fab a bracket for light and camera. This device seems to be overkill.

because I got it for super cheap over a year ago, and had it to use lol. and it covers the harness and plug on the tailgate itself

I've wanted to go spareless, but the whole musical chair aspect of not having a spare is a little worrisome, especially if you're out alone or just one or two people. Also, if out with someone, obviously if sharing the spare, it'd have to be close enough to help. Which isn't always a given with the bigger tires.

Somebody on 6g that had a delete was saying they did so having Superswampers or similar that you can run very low (with bead grips?) and they also kept a tire repair and sidewall repair kit handy. That sounded like not a bad option if someone can find the right tire/wheel combo and feel comfortable with patch kits. I think the GlueTread's you have to kinda know how to apply it just right.

A flat that couldn't be repaired with a patch kit is pretty far down my list of parts that may leave me stranded. People feel just fine without having an extra alternator, water pump, fuel pump, belts, etc.... Don't sweat the petty stuff, not pet the sweaty stuff.

that makes fair enough sense… but the only issue we’ve had in our 15+ Chicagoland Broncos trips to off-road events, is tire problems (except for one cooked alternator). One was the tire getting de-beaded in a mud hole, and filled the tire with mud… luckily we had a spare to swap on their rig.

That's because the incidence rate of tire failures is much higher and thus more probable than broken down parts. We're generally running newer vehicles; I could see having a parts truck following you if you're at Johnson Valley or similar and want to be ready for any inevitability, or if you have a 20yr old banged up Jeep.

Not that it's a bad idea to keep a couple wear parts and tools available, but I wouldn't say it's a necessity like having a plan for a tire issue.

Too my point, a spare readily available.

How big of a PITA are these to install? I am thinking about doing a delete but want to be able to swap a spare back on when I head out for a wheeling trip.

I want to say there's a mounting rack you can get to put it inside? Or make something to hold it. Other than having to pick that MF'er up and in each time, this seems like a decent compromise to me.
