Depends on how old the diesel powered vehicle is. Old ones are 100% mechanical. They don't need electricity to run once they're started. Fuel pump is mechanical. And they can be push started.

I was talking about the availability of fuel if you had a vehicle that was fully mechanical, regardless of engine type.

True, and that will work for a while if people let you siphon out their gas. OTOH, a working vehicle would draw a lot of attention in this scenario. If 20 well-armed people show up then you can say goodbye to your very rare all-mechanical vehicle that still works after an EMP. Alternately, you may be required by the surrounding community to be their driver or lend out your vehicle for important tasks.

Yeah but, 19 out of the 20 will be dumbfounded when they're red dots/EOTech and various other doohookies are out of commission, so you'll only have to deal with 1 or 2 at most

Proper nuclear EMP shielding isn't simple. I read up on this at a ham radio forum where the issue came up and some knowledgeable people spoke up. (Radio is all about interactions between electromagnetic waves and electricity, including induced currents which can be a real problem for operations. Lots of electrical engineers in the field.)

Apparently you need to have two Faraday cages, one within the other, not touching, with no gaps, and no power cords or antennas passing through the cage walls. In other words, you need to store the item(s) you want to protect unpowered and unused as backups. If it's a working unit then it can't be shielded while working, and it might get caught unprotected if only shielded part-time.

I still might put away a spare receiving radio and battery that are properly shielded, but I'm not sure how much good it would do IRL. Hope I never find out.

Your correct. I came to a similar conclusion long ago and decided it wasn't worth the effort unless you lived deep under ground. Not my cup of tea

Weird that the Bronco cant do this when my 2020 Mustang GT/CS PP with button start doesn't have an issue. Ive done it myself when the battery died last winter.

If there's an EMP then gas stations won't be pumping either. Besides, the tanker trucks won't be delivering anymore so it's goodbye gas- and diesel-powered vehicles. Might as well get a horse or two.

Yep. Modern rednecks have gone a step furthur and simply use cell phone to call Uber when transport is required.......

I've never heard of anyone bump starting using first gear.

Used to bump start in 1st. Did it in granny gear on trucks that had it. Just means you don't have to be moving as fast to get it started. Never hurt anything...but then only had to do it a handful of times.

Now, the challenge was bump starting an automatic...it's possible but takes a bit more skill.

chuckle.....can be your right, but keep in mind the suns energy is free. All that is required is to harness its energy which can be done in many ways not all of which require solid state circuitry....or even electricity.
