I tried to do that with my Bronco.
It started and then immediately shut itself down with a ton of error codes.
After I shut off the ignition, I let the Bronco sit on the end of the driveway for a minute or two.
Then I tried starting it with the start button and all the error codes cleared.

Yeah, the old days of starting a dead-battery car by rolling and popping the clutch are gone.
At least we still have a manual transmission to roll our own gear selection.
It won't be very long before that's gone too.
Yes I didn’t need to do it I just did it like I would occasionally do in my civic. I do always have jumper cables but there was something about a nice smooth bump start that was fun! Don’t get me wrong I still love the Bronc and the manual.

Any gear will work. Except reverse unless you're backing down a hill. First gear is convenient since you don't have to downshift to drive away. I've used other gears. Which did you use?
First and a smooth clutch engage so no drive bang

I had a ‘74 Volvo in college that I roll-started in reverse from its uphill parking spot at my apartment. I did that for a few months until I got a new battery.

I miss the days when working on a car only required a little shade-tree experience. I will admit that YouTube tutorials would’ve come in handy back then!
Yeah, a screw driver, a few wrenches, and a timing light, you could fix almost anything!
Maybe a spray can of starter fluid too, haha.

Make me wanna go build a old Bronco that’s computer dumb and be done with technology.

Because when the shit hits the fan do you think your new bronco will start or even drive after a emp pulse attack. 🤔

The 72 Beetle I bump started at least once a month needed the physical key turned to the ON position, so it makes sense that somehow the Bronco needs to get turned on.

Has anyone tried uncoupling the battery to mimic a completely dead battery and then tried to bump start?

Can you hit the ON button after the bump start?

Does it make a difference if the fob is at the bottom of the console in thr location wwherea dead fob can talk to the Bronco?

Did it run long enough before the error codes to have given her enough juice to charge to a battery enough to restart a second time?

How far do y'all get before the shut down and all the error codes occur? Is just a matter of inches? Feet? A mile? Long enough to get you to the next freeway exit?

How many times would it let you repeat the process? Say I am two miles from a freeway off-ramp and the next QT or Buccees... can I limp there after a couple of bump starts? 🤷‍♀️

That was my first thought also. Being able to bump start was one of the reasons I wanted a manual transmission. However, I wanted a V6 more. No regrets so far. I can still go to M if I want to control which gear I am in.
The computer won't start the engine unless it thinks the clutch is in.

I've tried it, it does not work. I think that it's because the engine will only start with the clutch in. I plan to wire in a momentary switch that lets me bypass the pedal switch, mostly for being able to start the engine with the clutch out and in neutral, but it might allow pop starting.

I've thought about doing the same thing. Need one of those 'round tuits.

unless you build it with points you aren't going to start an old bronco either. So no electronic ignition. You are setting the gap... get that crisp new 100 out (we used a 20 back then but you know ... inflation)

If there's an EMP then gas stations won't be pumping either. Besides, the tanker trucks won't be delivering anymore so it's goodbye gas- and diesel-powered vehicles. Might as well get a horse or two.

I've thought about that but you have to go back a long time to find a vehicle with no electronics. The first thing that went electronic was the distributor i think....my 80 4cyldr 4spd jeep already had electronics. 80 was the first year they started putting a 4spd in jeeps and i ordered one. Hated the three speed and v8's cause they were always breaking axles and frames. 6 banger was the best engine back then

and diesel-powered vehicles.
Depends on how old the diesel powered vehicle is. Old ones are 100% mechanical. They don't need electricity to run once they're started. Fuel pump is mechanical. And they can be push started.

I’m a old car guy. Still using points in one of my vehicles. I have things protected in faraday boxes that would be useful if needed.
You Don’t need electricity to draw fuel from all the modern cars that wont work 😂😂.

There are many things now days that are hardened and will still function.

I just want the capability to push start my car if i choose.

Adapt and Overcome 😎👍

I sold a running 85 toyota truck 4x4 solid axle with automatic trans, the buyer bought it to flat tow & sell in mexico, he also hauled a replacement manual trans/tranfer case in back of truck with him, said they wont buy automatics down there, Manuals dont need batteries.

Oh yeah, like the Ford 2000 in my pix. Runs well without any electricity even with the ignition turned off. Tough old bird. Maybe ten years before that pix was taken by a retired veitnam egg layer I bush hogged maybe a !/2 acre with the oil light on before i stopped to find the crankcase drain plug was missing. I drove it back to the ranch, put a new plug in and oil then went back to work. That tractor still works as good as ever and spends time bush hoggin each year. Don't make em like that anymore.
