Hey all. I am looking to do some off-roading soon but I understand I should get some decent skid plates before doing anything major so as to protect my vehicle. I have a 2D Wildtrak for reference. Can anyone give me a quick rundown as to what exactly I should protect and what to look for when shopping for skid plates? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Hi Jarod. Welcome to the forum. Skid plates are a big topic here. The following link https://www.cjponyparts.com/ford-full-body-steel-skid-plates-4-piece-set-4-door-bronco/p/SKIDP2/?year=2024&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Best COS Shopping&utm_term=4583451684401234&utm_content=Best COS gives you an idea of what factory skid plates cover. These came on my Badlands. I added a transmission skid from Talons Garage. The factory set up plus trans skids have served me well when wheeling in Colorado and Moab. Use the forum’s search function to broaden your knowledge.

Enjoy your new Bronco. Take care.

Ford makes it ridiculous to fill in the skids when you already have the front.

I want the gas tank, but alone they price it out of reach, so you buy a whole set, which you don't need and you're spending money on 2 skids you then have to sell.

Anyway, I've trying to figure out the best way to go about this, and I keep going back to RCI, because it's cheaper and easier, but I'd prefer the 1 piece OEM.

Ford sucks when it comes to additional mods after purchase. They really don't get it.

If you have a 4 door, get the OEM skid plate kit through Ford Acessories with a 25% discount, works out to about $650, and comes with a decent gas tank skid plate. A 2 door Wild track should already have the tank skid plate so the OEM kit isn't worth it. If you look at the aftermarket kits, most exclude the gas tank skid or charge $600 extra for it. The OEM kit doesn't come with a trans skid. If you have Ford points, you can use them for the purchase.

IS there a 25% off now?

Check local classifieds for an OEM bash plate and engine skid, people take off perfectly good skids all the time for upgrades. Then buy whatever flavor of trans skid that tickles your fancy.

Here's a great view of my skids, all OEM except the trans which is a cheap Mabett and the DV8 shock skids. That's the essential set, you can get LCA and diff skids but they are a waste IMO. These will get you through 7 rated trails all day.

It comes on a long wood pallet about 6', weighs a lot, if you have a pick-up or trailer, bring it.

Didn't expect that. I was thinking it would fit in the Bronco, good to know ahead of time.

Thanks.

If you have the V6 I’d do the transmission crossmember skids and rear shock skids. Those are a couple spots it’s common to hit that hang low. I have RCI for the crossmember and DV8 for the rear shock, which also provides a little protection for the rear of the lower links.

Agreed. People forget the transmission crossmember skids - very exposed crossmembers made of chintzy metal I’ve beat up pre-skids. Yes and rear shock skids, first get - at the level of eliminate double honk, it’s an obvious easy fix.
