I’ve been saying it for a few years, prices rose to help make EV stickers more palatable.
That’s where the government came in.
The EV mandates, raised all prices across the board.
Who is going to pay for all the EV’s dying on the lots?
Who is going to pay for all the research and development of EV’s?
Answer; We are, for decades.

Except for that exhaust right in front of the rear tires, waiting to be crushed the first time you approach a big rock. Not sure what they were thinking. Plus, you would wheel a $200k rig only if you are filthy rich. I bet 99.99% of these vehicles are mall princeses.
The only G I've ever seen out in the wild was about a 5 to 10 year old rig built up in Death Valley. I'm pretty sure it was not with its first owner.

This is even true for Lexus GX460/470. They can be built up wonderfully for off-roading, but very few are doing so before they are on their 3rd owner.

The upside of many luxury nameplates, German ones in particular , is that their value drops like a rock in the secondary market. So a G wagon with decent mileage can drop below 100k within 4-5 years of purchase. Even then, owning one makes sense mostly for people with good mechanical skills. With germal cars it is over $2k just to drive them to an Indy mechanic. I hate them with a passion but my wife sure loves her Merc.

Yes, German cars are fantastic to lease but not particularly great longer term purchases as parts and labor are just horrid, especially if servicing with a dealer.

I've had both a 2012 Audi TT-S and a 2016 VW Golf R and loved both of them. Both cases I bought with an extended warranty and basically ran before it expired. My Audi was actually pretty bullet proof, but needed a ton of expensive work coming up on ~80K miles, so that was a good enough reason to dump it and move on at that point.

I've been tempted by BMW a couple of times in recent years, but have yet to take the plunge...

I just upgraded from a '22 Badlands to a '23 Braptor and despite it not being a great financial decision, I would do it all over again. I made a big mistake of not converting a golden ticket and have been regretting it ever since so when prices started falling well below MSRP I jumped on one.

To be clear, I'm not trying to replace the GLS with a Braptor. The GLS belongs to my wife. I just feel like Mercedes can justify the 100K+- price so much easier than the Raptor.

What is a golden ticket?
Early reservation holders that were still left waiting due to allocation and commodity constraints were given the opportunity to convert their reservation to a Raptor. Doing so, they would forgo the price protection that was in place for their original reservation/order.

I may be in the minority here but a Raptor is a toy.

If you are looking at one do you really care what price is? I know I didn’t. I wanted the Raptor and you have to pay to play.

That’s how I looked at it and haven’t looked back.

Just my opinion.

FYI: Not trying to start an argument, I just happened to catch your post on the same day I caught this from an economist I follow: " U.S. drivers purchased 346,000 battery-powered vehicles in 24Q3, a 5% Q-o-Q rise and an 11% Y-o-Y increase. EVs now comprise 9% of new car sales, the highest level on record. "

And personally, I'm opposed to government mandates, but having said that, I would totally purchase electric F-150 pick up truck if... IF... Ford made an electric 2dr, regular cab long bed 4x4 base model. But that would be my choice.

I wouldn't trade my $36K Bronco Base for a GLS 450, or even a Porsche Cayenne. The latter looks like a jelly bean like everything else -- think KIA. I could care less about wood panels glued on top of plastic. Sure the Raptor is expensive, so is anything else with comparable capability. Its not a luxury car or pretending to be one. If expensive European vehicles are your thing great, each to their own. Some of us prefer something else and its not because we can't afford it. If $90K is too much for a Raptor, how is Mercedes or BMW sedan worth this much and more?

The reported death of the EV in the United States is greatly overstated right now. The market is still undergoing growth, just not at the initially forecast rates and I would say production/supply is definitely outstripping demand right now (however, this is true for lots of other vehicles, like Ford Broncos :)).

EVs are fantastic for multi-vehicle families living in suburban or urban areas with their own ability to L1 or L2 charge, or in areas with ample L2 charging supply that is reasonably priced. They also are great in places like Arizona that have relatively expensive gas in tandem with very cheap electricity. It costs me roughly $3 to drive 100 miles in my EV6 GT assuming power at $0.09 per kW. And this is not a particularly efficient electric car with 576 hp. My Raptor meanwhile is roughly $20 assuming 87 octane around $3 a gallon.

As battery technology continues to evolve the next 5 years with 800V architectures taking over along with additional build out of DC fast charging capabilities, I do think EV adoption will steadily rise (albeit slowly) as some of the penalties associated with EVs start to further relax.

Honestly, I'd blame California and the overall CAFE targets for causing the big anti-EV push in the US currently as yet again we're realizing that this country by large doesn't want mandated behavior shoved down its throat. The charging infrastructure was also not there yet when EVs really started getting pushed around 2022.

I don't have anything against EVs, but I wouldn't purchase one for two reasons. #1 they are worthless when it gets close to the battery life 8 - 10 years. They aren't any greener -- especially when the electricity comes from coal like it does where I live.

There is a EV commercial of the vehicle (I forget the make & model but not Tesla) driving past wind turbines with the people inside smiling because they are "saving the planet" What a load of BS. A more appropriate visual would be the car driving past a coal power plants belching smoke. Only 10% comes from wind and that is likely a big exaggeration. The power from wind turbines is going to be 100% consumed if you drive a EV or not. At the end of the day any wind power your EV consumes has to be made up by fossil fuels. That said EVs are cool and I would consider getting one just not for saving the planet because you aren't! The 8 - 10 year battery life and zero resale value is what keeps me from getting one. Heck I consider my 10 year old car my new car.

How? 87 octane gas is $2.99 here and my 2-dr with the tiny tank is about $30 -ish (depending how low the tank is).

And as toys go, a relatively inexpensive toy.. It's not difficult to spend $3-400k on a fun car, $100k buys perhaps (3-4) nice watches (or 1/2 of a single very nice timepiece, LOL), a relatively bare bones, high-quality 28ft fishing boat is $300k before adding $35k of additional electronics and accessories and gets (best case) 2 mpg of $4.25 fuel at the marina. An easy $1k tank fill and I've done as many as (3) fills in a single week. Annual slip fees, service, winterizing, etc.etc....

I said cost per 100 miles. 15 mpg, 6.66 gallons of gas per 100 miles, $19.98. Price per tank is around $60 (roughly 3x that assuming you are quite empty).
