The factory fill is way over max on these. At least it was on both that I have purchased new. I’m not sure why, but evidently it doesn’t hurt anything.

My 2.7L with original oil pan, was also overfilled from the factory. I did not measure how much I drained out but the dip sick showed it was over full.

When I changed the oil at around 3K miles. I let it sit overnight and the next morning I pulled the cap off of the oil filter, pulled the oil drain plug and let it drain for about an hour. Nothing was draining after that. I reinstalled the oil drain plug, installed a new filter and reinstalled the oil filter cap. I filled with 6 qts, ran it for about five minutes and waited about a half hour before checking the oil level. It was about half way up the hash marks. I added another 1/2 qt and when I checked the oil level later, it was right at the top of the hash marks.

6 to 6.5 qts works depending on where you want the level to be. 7 qts would put it at the factory fill.

Ok Ok but is the OPs Bronco consuming too much oil? I honestly have not had an engine built in this century, and even a decade before that, that consumed a quart between changes. This is not normal. Follow @Ducati1098 s advice and get a consumption test done while it's still in warranty

The manual says 6 quarts, the guy who works on these vehicles for a living says 6 quarts, but you do you.
Same vehicle but only 22k miles. I use Mobil 1 5w-30, no oil usage between changes at 5k intervals. I will say however that getting an accurate oil reading from the dipstick is almost impossible on the 2.7 Bronco. About once every two weeks, I'll pop the hood, pull the dipstick out then close the hood for a few hours to allow all the oil to drain into the crankcase and off the interior of the dip stick tube. After 3-4 hours I'll put the clean stick in and retract to get the oil level. So far, no more than a half-quart usage during that 5k oil change interval.
Appreciate the feedback. Agree that dipstick is tough to read.

Yesterday, I briefly cut opened the filter and saw small metal pieces on the media. Will layout today and see if magnet pics up anything. I hear that if flakes remain, that is a lot better than if the flakes are picked up.

I’ve cut open most of my oil filters in the dozen or so oil changes I’ve done for my two broncos and there are always some sparkly flakes on the filter media. Most of the time they aren’t magnetic which probably means they’re aluminum. The engine’s front cover, lower block, and pistons are made out of aluminum along with a lot of other parts, I’m sure. I’ve also had oil analysis ISO particle counts done and nothing was deemed abnormal in those counts even with some flakes in the filter.

So I would say what you’re seeing is probably normal.

These two are from 5,000 mile runs on Valvoline Restore and Protect and HPL.

The sparkles never show up that well in pictures but I’d estimate each filter has 2-3 dozen little pieces of glitter, a few in each pleat.

That's reassuring. I also has a few very small specs of metal in the media. Some ferous as I ran a strong magnet accross it and picked them up.

Yeah. What wasn’t clear to me in the original post is if you noticed the low oil level when you first purchased the vehicle (before you changed the oil) or if it was low after you personally changed the oil. If you saw it low before your oil change I’d guess that it was just under filled by whoever serviced previously.

I would guess that these engines will probably still run OK on 3-4 quarts for a long time if they had to, but I could be wrong.

There was no oil pressure problem since you didn’t have a light/message on the dash. While it was low, you might’ve noticed slightly higher oil temps if you had the “gauges” displayed, and the oil wouldn’t be able to suspend as much contamination since there would be less of it, but I doubt any damage was done.

Bought the car from carmax with 41k miles on it. The service history I saw was showing oil changes every 10k-11k miles. Not good. Eventhough carmax changed the oil and filter....it was full, I did change oil and filter with Valvoline R&P within days of co.ing home. 6qts! Went to change last weekend and dipstick was dry prior to oil change.

I'd pull the under trays and see what's going on. Take pics...any warranty left?
